Five people, including a 35-year-old man and his daughter, were killed in the past 24 hours in separate incidents of landslides in Himachal Pradesh as heavy rain pounded several places in the state disrupting normal life, officials said on Monday.

Educational institutions will be closed in nine districts of Shimla, Kangra, Sirmaur, Una, Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Solan, and Lahaul and Spiti on Tuesday in view of warning of heavy rains.

Besides, such institutions in Banjar, Kullu and Manali sub-divisions of Kullu district will also remain shut on Tuesday, the officials said.

The Delhi Metro witnessed its third technical snag within a week on Monday, causing delays on the Yellow and Blue lines and leading to overcrowding at several stations. Train movement was disrupted between Sultanpur and Millennium City Centre, leading to long waiting times for passengers. A huge crowd gathered at the Hauz Khas, Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, Yamuna Bank and Kashmere Gate metro stations, with platforms so packed that there was hardly any space left between commuters, and passengers struggled to board trains. This was the third such incident in the past week, with a similar glitch reported on Friday morning on the Yellow Line.

Manoj Jarange asks Maratha protesters to follow HC directives; Don't roam on Mumbai streets, park vehicles in designated areas. The Bombay High Court on Monday noted the city has been brought to a standstill due to the ongoing Maratha quota agitation, and the situation is grim as reservation campaigner Manoj Jarange hardened his stand by giving up water on day four of the stir. The HC, while observing the protest has not been peaceful and has violated all pre-stir conditions, urged for normalcy to be restored in Mumbai, and gave an opportunity to Jarange, spearheading the stir, and his supporters to rectify the situation and ensure all streets are vacated by Tuesday noon.

India News live: Over 2.56 lakh people affected as floods ravage Punjab; 29 lives lost, 15,688 evacuated

Punjab is reeling under the impact of severe floods triggered by incessant rains, with large-scale devastation reported across the state. According to Punjab Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister S. Hardeep Singh Mundian, the floods have affected more than 2.56 lakh people across 12 districts, displacing thousands and causing heavy losses to human lives, property, agriculture, and livestock.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, on Monday said that continuous heavy rainfall across the state has led to massive loss of life and property, severely affecting public infrastructure. He said that the Disaster Management Act has been invoked in response to the situation, and the entire state has been declared a disaster-affected area starting today. He also blamed climate change for the disaster.

Speaking to reporters in Shimla, the CM confirmed that "four people have died in Shimla, there are reports of some deaths in the Rajgarh area of Sirmaur district, and Hamirpur has also suffered significant damage."he said.

The Chief Minister said roads, drinking water schemes, irrigation projects, electricity supply systems, schools, and government institutions have been badly hit.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached the spot after Army dismantled the protest site, reported CNN-News18. The ministry of defence has reportedly said that the permission was given for two days but the protest went on for over a month. It said that a permission from ministry of defence was needed if the protest was to be done for more than three days at the site. The army dismantled protest stage set for the Trinamool Congress's Bengali language movement at the foot of the Gandhi statue on Mayo Road in Dharmatala in Kolkata. Mamata Banerjee said that the act is undemocratic. TMC also accused the BJP of misusing the Army.

Bombay High Court has asked the Maharashtra government to evict the protesters from all places except Azad Maidan, reported CNN-News18. The High Court said it will hear the case tomorrow and has asked the government to share details of the steps taken to that effect. The Court noted that the protest has caused the entire city of Mumbai to come at a standstill. Activist Manoj Jarange on Monday warned that more than 5 crore Marathas will come to Mumbai if Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis does not listen to the quota demands of the community. Jarange, whose stir for quota for the community entered its fourth day at Azad Maidan in the southern part of the metropolis, accused Fadnavis of deliberately delaying a decision on the issue.

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the Telangana government's domicile rule permitting students, who have studied for the last four years up to Class 12 in the state, for admissions in medical and dental colleges under state quota.
