The Ahmadpur Assembly constituency, designated as constituency number 236, is situated in Maharashtra's Latur district. This unreserved seat will witness polling on November 20, alongside all 287 constituencies in the state.
Latur, which encompasses Ahmadpur, has a total of 2,016,990 registered voters, comprising 1,055,252 male voters, 961,676 female voters, and 62 third-gender voters.
Currently, Babasaheb Mohanrao Patil of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) represents Ahmadpur as its sitting MLA.
Ahmadpur constituency candidates for 2024
The Ahmadpur Assembly constituency is set to witness an intense electoral battle in the 2024 state elections, with Vinayak Patil from the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP SP) squaring off against sitting MLA Babasaheb Mohanrao Patil, representing the Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction.
This unique face-off underscores the political divide within the NCP after its split in 2023, where Ajit Pawar, along with a faction of leaders, joined the BJP-led Maha Yuti alliance, while Sharad Pawar continues to lead the opposing faction as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
Ahmadpur Assembly Elections: A Glimpse into 2019
In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Babasaheb Mohanrao Patil from the NCP emerged victorious, securing 84,636 votes with a vote share of 39.37 percent. Patil has been a significant political figure in Ahmadpur, having secured a commanding victory in 2019. He won by a margin of 29,191 votes, defeating BJP’s Jadhav Patil Vinayakrao Kishanrao. However, his alignment with the Ajit Pawar faction has set the stage for a challenge from his former party colleague, Vinayak Patil, who now carries the NCP (SP) banner.
Ahmadpur Assembly Elections: Playback 2014
This constituency has historically leaned towards the NCP, with Ramesh Nagnath Kadam winning the seat in the 2014 elections. Kadam garnered 62,120 votes (32.42 percent), defeating BJP candidate Kshirsagar Sanjay Dattatraya, who managed 53,753 votes (28.05 percent). The victory margin then was 8,367 votes.
Shifting Political Discourse: 2019 to 2023
The 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections led to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) forming the government. Political dynamics, however, shifted soon after when the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena parted ways with the NDA to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in coalition with the NCP and Congress. Thackeray took over as Chief Minister.
In 2022, Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde, along with 40 MLAs, broke away from Thackeray's faction and allied with the BJP, resulting in the collapse of the MVA government. Shinde assumed the role of Chief Minister under the reconstituted Maha Yuti alliance of the BJP and Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
The turbulence continued in 2023 with the NCP witnessing a split. Ajit Pawar, a senior NCP leader, rebelled against Sharad Pawar and aligned with the Maha Yuti, further consolidating the BJP-Shinde alliance. The state's political landscape is now divided between the MVA, comprising Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and Congress, and the Maha Yuti, which includes the BJP, Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
The Ahmadpur constituency is set to go to polls amid the shifting political discourse in the state as Maharashtra goes into polls on November 20. The results for this seat, along with others in Maharashtra, will be announced on November 23.
