Right then, it was a run fest in Ranchi with a match aggregate of 681 runs. If this opening game is anything to go by, we are in for a cracker of a series. The two teams will now meet in Raipur on Wednesday, 3rd December, for the second ODI of this three-match series. Rested for this game, Temba Bavuma and Keshav Maharaj will most likely be back for the next one, and their return will be a boost as the Proteas look to draw level. As for India, they will be pleased with the all-round effort, especially the way their senior players led the way and how the pace attack bowled. They will now look to carry this momentum into the second game and try to seal the series. The first ball in Raipur will be bowled at 1.30 pm IST (8 am GMT). As always, you can join us early for the build-up. Until next time, take care and goodbye!

Virat Kohli is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his superb ton. Kohli says it was nice to get into the game the way he did today. Adds that he felt the pitch played quite well for the first 20 to 25 overs before it slowed down, and his focus was on enjoying himself out there. Mentions that once he got a start, it became about building an innings. Shares that he has never been a big believer in doing a lot of preparation. For him, the game has always been more mental than anything else. Further says that he works physically hard because that is the way he lives, not something he does specifically for cricket, and being mentally sharp is what matters most to him. Kohli states that whenever he arrives somewhere, he makes sure he arrives at a hundred per cent. Tells that he wanted to get a proper feel of the conditions, so he batted both in the day and under lights after reaching Ranchi early. With more than 300 ODI games behind him, he believes that if you stay in touch with the game and understand when you are hitting the ball well, the rhythm naturally comes back. When asked by Harsha Bhogle, he quashes the rumours and makes it clear that he is continuing to play this one format.

KL Rahul, the Indian captain, says he felt a bit nervous leading the ODI side again after a while, but is really pleased with how the bowlers stuck to their plans and kept taking wickets. He mentions that he is enjoying batting at No. 6, a role he has been given in the last few series, and feels it is helping him grow as a player. He praises Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for their exceptional performances, saying it is always fun to watch them bat and that their presence in the dressing room is invaluable to the group. Rahul also speaks highly of Harshit Rana’s progress, noting that he has the potential to become a very good fast bowler. He ends by acknowledging Kuldeep Yadav’s importance, calling him someone who consistently steps up and takes crucial wickets for the team.

The skipper of South Africa, Aiden Markram says he is really proud of the effort from the team. Adds that it was great to watch the guys step up and do their thing. Mentions that they never lost belief, and there was genuine hope in the dressing room throughout. Shares that they knew the ball would swing under the lights, and felt that chasing was the best way to win the game. Admits it is up to the top three, including himself, to give the side a solid start, and we all saw what the middle order is capable of. Shares that he is very proud of the group for showing plenty of character. Further says that any team would love to bat as deep as possible, and both Jansen and Bosch contribute brilliantly in that regard.

Time for the presentation ceremony...

India's Kuldeep Yadav is in for a chat. Kuldeep says he and KL Rahul had strategised to stay attacking and look for wickets, mixing up his deliveries with scrambled seam and seam-up variations while targeting a back-of-a-length area. He explains that bowling in wet conditions is always a challenge and praises the way Matthew Breetzke and Marco Jansen batted against spin. Kuldeep adds that the plan to slow the ball up and vary his pace brought him Jansen’s crucial wicket, a moment he feels turned the game in India’s favour.

Earlier, India were asked to bat first on a surface that allowed batters to hit through the line. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma capitalised with a 136-run stand, with Rohit being dropped on 1 by Tony de Zorzi. After Rohit fell, the Proteas pulled things back as the ball got older and their variations kicked in. The incoming batters struggled for fluency, and Kohli was starved of strike. He brought up his 52nd ODI ton before his surge was cut short. Late contributions from KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja pushed India towards 350 before excellent death bowling from Corbin Bosch held them to 349.

Jansen’s innings really made India sweat and closed the gap between the two sides. Through the Jansen-Breetzke stand, the tourists had the momentum with them, but the game turned on its head when both set batters fell within three balls. Corbin Bosch kept the flame of the chase alive, with support coming from Prenelan Subrayen and Nandre Burger. The task eventually proved too steep for Bosch, as in dewy conditions India’s pace trio held their nerve at the death to close out the contest.

It was the worst possible start for the Proteas in pursuit of 350, as they were reduced to 11/3 inside five overs. After making early inroads, Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh lost a bit of discipline, and Matthew Breetzke cashed in to get going. Breetzke led the recovery with Tony de Zorzi offering a steady hand, but the southpaw did not last long. First Dewald Brevis and then Marco Jansen counter-attacked, with Breetzke shifting into a supporting role.

A really good game of cricket. An ODI classic that ebbed and flowed with plenty of momentum shifts, but in the end, India emerged as the winners to go 1-0 up in the series. Given the start they had, finishing on 349 felt like they left a few runs out there, but their bowlers ensured it was enough on the day. It was a spirited chase from South Africa after being 11/3, and the true Proteas fight was on display as they kept landing punches. Reflecting on the game, they will look back at some of the loose shots in the first Powerplay that put them on the back foot, and will feel that if any of their top three had played a long innings, the chase could have unfolded very differently.

49.2OUT! CAUGHT! India win the 1st ODI by 17 runs. PHEW! What a game we have had in Ranchi. On a length around off, Corbin Bosch looks to smash this up and over the fielder at long off but the bat tilts in his hands at the time of contact with the ball and the white leather spoons over Rohit Sharma at extra cover. Rohit makes no mistake and holds onto it.

49.1On a length around middle and leg, Corbin Bosch smashes this to long on for no run.

South Africa need 18 off the last over. It will be Prasidh Krishna to bowl. More drama as India have been penalised for not completing their overs on time. They can have only 4 fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

48.6Excellent stop from Rohit Sharma as he saves three for the side. Full toss, wide of off, Corbin Bosch smashes this to the right of extra cover. Rohit Sharma puts in the dive, full-stretch to his right and gets a bit of hand to it. Takes the sting out of it and the batters cross for one.

48.5Another wide yorker, on off, Corbin Bosch jams this out.

48.4Wide yorker, around off, Corbin Bosch goes for the sweep again but misses.

48.3On a length around middle and leg, Corbin Bosch flicks this on the bounce to long on. Runs three fourths of the deck and turns back as there wasn't an opportunity for the second and Bosch wants to be on strike.

48.2SIX! Corbin Bosch clears the fence and this game is far from over. Full and wide of off, Corbin Bosch shuffles across and sweeps this. Gets more of a top edge that flies over the fence towards the deep backward square leg region for a biggie. 19 more needed off 10 deliveries.

48.1Bumper, on off, Corbin Bosch pulls this through square leg for two.

47.6Rana goes full and on off, Ottneil Baartman edges this off the inside, back onto his pads. 27 needed off 12 balls for South Africa.

47.5Full and wide of off, Corbin Bosch drives this to deep point and rotates strike this time. Leaves just one delivery for Ottneil Baartman to negotiate.

47.4SIX! Bosch is just refusing to give up. Slower one, around off, Corbin Bosch steps across and slogs this towards the left of long on and clears the fence at will.

47.3Good length, wide outside off again, Corbin Bosch thumps this back to the bowler.

47.2FOUR! Maiden ODI FIFTY for Bosch. Full toss, on off, Corbin Bosch drives this all along the ground. The ball was hit straight to Rohit at extra cover but he failed to field this. The ball went through Sharma's legs and raced to the fence for four.

47.1On a length wide of off, Corbin Bosch muscles this to long off and refuses the single.

46.6A wicket maiden in the 47th over from Singh. On a length around the pads, Ottneil Baartman drills this down to long on. Corbin Bosch denies the opportunity to take a single.

46.5Bumper, going across the batter. Ottneil Baartman hops up on his toes and looks to cut this over point but misses.

46.4Good length on middle and leg, Ottneil Baartman tucks this to mid-wicket.

46.3On a length wide of off, Ottneil Baartman goes for the drive but misses.

46.2On a length, going down the leg side, Ottneil Baartman misses the tickle and gets it brushed off his pads back to the keeper.

Ottneil Baartman is the last man.

46.1OUT! CAUGHT BEHIND! Slower bumper, on off, Nandre Burger initially looks to ramp it over the keeper but then bails out. He fails to drop his guard and leaves his bat hanging. The ball balloons behind off the bat and KL Rahul takes a regulation catch. This might just derail this South African train in this run chase.

45.6Low and full around off, Nandre Burger pushes this down to long on for one.

45.5LEG BYE! Another poor delivery from Prasidh Krishna but Corbin Bosch misses out one more time. Full toss, around the thigh pad, going down the leg. Corbin Bosch misses out on hitting it with the bat, gets it deflected off his thigh pads to square leg for one.

45.4On a length around middle and leg, Nandre Burger flicks this to deep mid-wicket for a single.

45.3On a length around the pads, Corbin Bosch flicks this on the bounce towards the right of Virat Kohli at long on. Kohli does well to cover a bit of ground and field it, keeping it down to only one.

45.2An opportunity missed by Bosch to add a boundary to his tally. Full toss, on the pads, Corbin Bosch misses out on the flick.

45.1Good length wide of off, Nandre Burger slices this towards deep point for one.

44.5Angled in, on a length, on middle and leg, Nandre tucks it with soft hands in the vacant mid-wicket region and collects a couple of runs.

Corbin Bosch and Nandre Burger are keeping South Africa in the game and they are just one big over away from snatching a monumental win.

44.4Oopsie, the bat handle has come off. Full and on middle, Bosch hits it down to long on for a single.

44.4Wide! A bumper from Arshdeep, over off. Corbin attempts the pull but misses. Wide given for height as the umpire reckons that the ball went over the batter's head. The replays tell that it was a marginal call.

44.3Full and on off, Burger squeezes out an inside edge that rolls behind on the leg side for a single.

44.2Low full toss, on middle, a mishit from Bosch but it saves him. It drops short of long on and Ruturaj Gaikwad collects it on the bounce. They cross.

44.1Into the surface but without any pace on it, on off. Corbin Bosch gets his hands high for the pull but is early into the shot and he fails to connect.

43.6FOUR! Gets it away! Another 11-run over and South Africa keep landing punches. Slanting into the left-hander, on a length, on middle and leg. Burger makes use of the angle and swings away. He does not quite get it from the middle of the bat but it goes over mid-wicket for a boundary.

43.5How did that miss the stumps? Rana sticks to the off-cutter and angles it into the left-hander, on a length. Burger does not pick the slower one and pushes out in front of his body. Gets beaten on the inside edge as the ball brushes the front pad and sneaks past the leg side before going towards the keeper.

43.4Miscued but safe! Pace off and wide on off, on a short of a length. Bosch stands tall and wants to hit this one on the rise. Spoons it up but the ball lands well in front of the man at deep cover. They cross.

43.3Full and pace on, outside off, Burger throws his hands at it. Gets an outside edge down to deep third for one.

43.2Fuller but another slower one, near the tramline on off. Corbin reaches out and thumps it to long off for one.

43.1FOUR! Put away! Rana bowls the off-cutter but gets both line and length wrong. Short and wide on off, Bosch does not miss out. Waits for the ball to arrive and slaps it past extra cover for a boundary.

42.6In line of the off stump, Burger taps it back to the bowler. A good over for the Proteas. 11 runs off it. South Africa need 61 runs in 42 balls.

42.5Flat and short, on middle and leg, Bosch shovels it to deep backward square leg and crosses over.

42.4Slightly fuller, on middle and leg, Bosch plays it with soft hands in the vacant mid-wicket region and comes charging back for the second run.

42.3SIX! Into the stands! Fractionally short by Jadeja, on middle and leg. Bosch gets the front leg out of the way and sets up on the back foot. Pummels it over deep square leg for a six.

42.2Leg bye! Short and a bit too straight, around the pads, Burger is beaten on the flick. A leg bye is taken as the ball goes off the pads on the leg side.

42.1Pushed through at 100.3 kph, on a nagging length, on middle. Bosch clears the front leg and swings across. Smears it to deep mid-wicket for a single.

41.5At 137.1 kph, on middle, full in length, Burger knocks it to mid on.

41.3Into the surface, over off. Nandre hops and looks to run it down but is beaten on the outside edge.

41.2On a hard length, on off, Burger stands tall and cuts it well but can't beat the point fielder.

41.1From around the wicket, on a length, attacking the stumps. Burger gets squared up in defence and the ball goes towards point off the outer half.

40.6Fired in at 98.9 kph, full and on off. Bosch backs away and looks to force the drive but mistimes it back to Jadeja. A tidy over from Jadeja. Just 4 runs off it. South Africa need 76 runs in 54 balls.

40.5Fuller and quicker, on off, Nandre eases it through covers and picks up a single.

Nandre Burger walks in next.

Wrong'un around off, Prenelan Subrayen clears his front foot and goes for a wild heave over mid-wicket. Ends up with a leading edge ballooning towards the right of the keeper. 38.4Fuller on middle and leg, Prenelan Subrayen flicks this to mid-wicket.

38.3Fuller on off, Corbin Bosch pushes this to long on for one.

38.2Spin and bounce for Jadeja. Tossed up, around off, the ball lands and kicks up on the batter, beating him on the outside edge. KL Rahul fails to gather this. Had Rahul gathered it, it would have been curtains for Corbin Bosch, as his back leg had been drawn out of the crease.

38.1Fuller on off, Prenelan Subrayen drives this to long off for one.

Looks like the ball has gotten too wet and needs to be changed. The fourth umpire is out with a box of balls. The ball has been changed, and we are all good to go.

37.6Tossed up around off, Prenelan Subrayen drives this through mid off for one.

37.5SIX! A huge six over Harshit Rana at deep mid-wicket from Prenelan Subrayen. Flighted, around off, Prenelan Subrayen plants his front foot towards his leg side and slogs this over Rana at the deep mid-wicket fence for a biggie. 94 more needed for SA to win this.

36.2Flatter and quicker on leg, Corbin Bosch blocks.

36.1A loud appeal for LBW and it looks plumb to the naked eye but the umpire turns it down. Fuller, on middle and leg, straightening after pitching. Corbin Bosch looks to flick this towards the mid-wicket region but misses and is hit on the back pad. Loud appeal from Jadeja but the umpire turns it down. KL Rahul sends this upstairs immediately. 35.5Fuller on off, Corbin Bosch fails to beat mid-wicket.

35.4FOUR! That's muscled to the fence. Short of a length around middle and leg, Corbin Bosch clears his front foot and hammers this flat and powerfully towards the left of Ravindra Jadeja at deep mid-wicket. Jadeja, despite the dive, can not keep this away from the fence.

34.2Fuller on off, Corbin Bosch smashes this towards the left of Kohli at long off. Bosch was keen on the second but Prenelan Subrayen denies and rightly so. The throw comes in flat from Kohli towards the bowler and Jadeja just breaks the stumps and appeals for a runout at his end. The umpire sends this upstairs just to be sure and the replay shows that Corbin Bosch was well inside the crease even before Ravindra Jadeja gathered this.

34.1Fired into the batter, Corbin Bosch punches this to Jadeja's right.

33.3OUT! CAUGHT! One brings two. Just like that, the game has turned upside down in favour of India. Fuller, around middle and off, Matthew Breetzke clears his front foot from the line of it and swings through the line. Fails to get right underneath it and finds Virat Kohli at the long on fence.

33.2Tossed up on the pads, Corbin Bosch drills this to long on for one.

Corbin Bosch walks out to bat.

33.1OUT! CAUGHT! A lucky breakthrough from Kuldeep Yadav as he sends back Jansen with an innocuous delivery. A half-tracker, wrong'un around off, Marco Jansen swivels for the pull but the ball comes on a lot slower. Hits this off the toe end of his bat. The ball doesn't travel the distance and goes straight into the hands of Ravindra Jadeja at the deep mid-wicket fence.

The physio comes on for the concussion check. Matthew Breetzke seems to be fine. He is ready to resume. A change in bowling as Kuldeep Yadav (6-0-43-1) returns to the attack.

32.6Good slower one, into the deck from Rana. Matthew Breetzke swings for the pull early but misses and gets hit on his helmet. Mandatory concussion check to follow. Brteetzke looks okay but this was a good delivery by Harshit Rana.

30.2Good length on off, Matthew Breetzke punts this to mid off for a dot.

30.1Full toss around off, Marco Jansen lofts this down the ground for a single.

Time for a drinks break. India's dominance with early wickets and that of Dewald Brevis has been short-lived as Marco Jansen and Matthew Breetzke's explosive partnership has shifted the momentum in South Africa's favour. 28.4Fuller and on off, Breetzke taps it with soft hands in front of cover and gets to the other end.

28.3In the air... but lands safely! Arshdeep switches to over the wicket and pushes the short ball across the right-hander. Jansen plays a half-hearted pull with the ball going across him. Skies it but luckily for him, the ball lands in the vacant mid-wicket region. The ball drops before any of the deep fielders can get there. Just a single.

28.2Short and wide on off, Matthew Breetzke stands tall and hammers it to deep point for a single.

26.4Slower bumper, going across the right-hander. MJ sways away from it.

26.3FOUR! Crunched! Arshdeep attempts the yorker but it comes out as a low full toss, outside off. Marco gets his hands through and smashes it to the right of mid off for a boundary. The 50-run stand comes up in just 29 balls.

LBW review! Not given on-field, but Kuldeep Yadav is pretty convinced. KL Rahul takes the review after having a chat with the bowler. Where has the ball pitched? Is it in line?
