Right then, that is it from this contest and South Africa have the crucial 1-0 lead in this three-game ODI series. However, the Proteas already had a couple of injury concerns before the first match and it seems like Tony de Zorzi will be added to that injury list, further depleting the squad. The next game will be played on Thursday, 4th September at Lord's and will begin at 12 pm GMT. However, you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up as well. For now, you can switch tabs and join our coverage of the UAE Tri-Series, where Afghanistan and Pakistan are battling it out in Match 4 of the series. Cheers!

South Africa skipper, Temba Bavuma, says it is important to start the series well and carry on the momentum from the series against Australia. Tells that they were clinical with the ball despite being put under pressure initially in the first innings. With the bat, they could have been more clinical but were happy with how they took on England's bowlers inside the Powerplay. Mentions it is tough to defend on this ground, with the dimensions and the conditions. Reckons Lord's might be different but they'll assess the conditions, keep the standard high and step up again.

Harry Brook, the captain of England, is down for a chat. Brook backs up this team's performance and sums up this as one bad day. He accepts that they were not up to the mark and also gives full credit to the South African side for outplaying them. Also backs up the debutant, Sonny Baker and says that he would bounce back in the upcoming matches. Finishes off by saying that the toss wouldn't have mattered much to them and they would have tried to replicate the same, which the Proteas did in the first innings with the ball. And looks to bounce back in the coming matches and play some good brand of cricket in front of the home crowd.

Keshav Maharaj is the Player of the Match for his fine four-wicket haul. Maharaj says it was a good wicket for the spinners and there was some nibble in the deck as well and fortunately, their bowlers utilized it. He says that England play really well under these conditions. Shares he made minor changes to his game and is happy to see the dividends pay off. Mentions they are still in transition and are happy to see players put their hands up and help the team.

The Presentation ceremony...

Earlier in the game, Temba Bavuma won the toss and put England into bat. Most of the home side's players were coming up long campaigns in The Hundred, which only finished a couple of days back but Jamie Smith looked in sublime touch early on. South Africa managed to make inroads in the first 10 overs but what followed wasn't expected one bit. When Harry Brook fell, the score read 82/3 but soon enough, the hosts were bundled out for 131, a monumental collapse. Keshav Maharaj was one of the chief architects of that collapse as he picked up 4 wickets but it was Wiaan Mulder who really broke the back of the English middle order with his three-wicket haul.

England barely had any runs to defend but the way Sonny Baker started made it all more difficult. Jofra Archer bowled a stellar opening spell from one end, but. Baker conceded 56 runs in his first 4 overs. Archer couldn't pick up a wicket and the rest of the bowlers seemed to be finding it hard to create any wicket-taking opportunities, until Adil Rashid managed to get rid of Aiden Markram, thanks to a stunning catch from Jamie Smith. That catch seemed to be the highlight of England's effort in the field but Rashid picked up a couple of more wickets in successive deliveries to give the crowd something to cheer for.

Having set the game up in the first innings with the ball, South Africa needed only 132 runs for the win. Aiden Markram set the tone by racking up 14 runs in the first over and he followed it up throughout the first Powerplay. Ryan Rickelton looked sluggish at the other end and even the shots that he timed weren't finding the gaps but he didn't look like getting out either. The duo put on 121 runs before finally Markram fell on 86, frustrated with himself as he would have loved to be there when the winning runs were hit. Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs also fell in quick succession before Dewald Brevis came in and smoked one out of the park to end the game.

A rollicking victory for South Africa and 2025 is turning out to be a wonderful year for the Proteas. First, a WTC Final win against the Aussies, then an ODI series win against Australia in Australia and now they are 1-0 up against England in England as well. They have outclassed England in this first ODI at Headingley and get the early advantage in the three-match series.

20.5SIX! Dewald Brevis finishes off the proceedings and does it in some style! And with that, South Africa beats England by 7 wickets and goes 1-0 up in the ODI series. Adil Rashid loops it up again, trying to purchase another wicket. Drops it near off and right at the hitting arc, Dewald Brevis decides to go for it and clubs it over the bowler's head for a biggie.

20.4Slows up the length ball and bowls it on leg, spins away. Brevis drops it to cover.

Dewald Brevis comes in to face the hat-trick ball. With the scores level, expect Brevis to not care for the hat-trick ball and just go for the big hit.

20.3OUT! BOWLED! TWO IN TWO for Adil Rashid! What was Tristan Stubbs thinking out there in the middle? Rashid bowls the googly and keeps the line over off. Stubbs, out of nowhere, decides to play the reverse-sweep on that and misses out on a proper connection. The ball gets dragged back onto the stumps and Stubbs walks back for a golden duck.

Tristan Stubbs is in at number 4 for South Africa.

20.2OUT! TAKEN! Adil Rashid gets another wicket. Flights a fuller delivery, outside off, spins away. Temba Bavuma lofts but his one hand comes off, mistimes it just over cover where Will Jacks runs to his left and takes it. Bavuma looked to finish things off in style but ended up paying the price.

20.1Floated, full and around middle, Temba Bavuma dabs it down to covers.

19.6Angling on the pads, flicked to deep mid-wicket for a single.

19.5Carse serves it on a fullish length and just outside off, Ryan Rickelton leans forward and creams it through the cover region. Harry Brook gives it a chase and puts in a dive to keep it inside. Three runs taken in the meantime.

19.4A slower length ball, wide of off. Temba Bavuma plays it to cover for a single.

19.3Leg Bye! Carse darts it a low full-toss at the pads, Ryan fails to lay any bat on it as the ball hits the pads and dribbles down to square leg for a bye.

19.2Overpitched and outside off. Ryan Rickelton punches as he leans but finds cover.

19.1Hard length from around the stumps, angled in, Ryan Rickelton jams it back to the bowler, who makes a good stop on the followthrough.

18.6A leg-breaker, flat and on middle, Temba Bavuma prods and blocks.

18.5OH! What happened there? Jacob Bethell slips while going for the catch and fails to reach. Adil Rashid loops it up and keeps the line at the stumps. Bavuma swats it over the mid on fielder and hits it high in the air. Jacob Bethell turns towards it and gives it a chase, but slips before reaching out for it. The batters run two in the meantime.

18.4TWO MORE! Floated full and outside off. Temba Bavuma lofts it over covers, over the infield for a couple of runs.

18.3That turns away off the deck! Adil Rashid bowls it slower through the air, drops it around middle and off. The ball just turns a mile to beat the outside edge of Bavuma.

18.2Flighted on middle, fuller delivery. Temba Bavuma blocks it back to the bowler.

Temba Bavuma is the new batter in.

18.1OUT! CAUGHT! Jamie Smith has pulled off a screamer to send back Markram. Adil Rashid floats it up on a full length and just outside off, Aiden Markram drives it hard, but fails to keep it down. Jamie Smith, at cover, flies off to his right and plucks it out of the thin air with one hand. There is a late check for a clean catch but the third umpire confirms that Smith completed the catch without getting any part of the ball onto the turf and Markram has to depart after a sensational knock of 86 (55).

17.6Brydon Carse generates extra bounce as he bowls it outside off on the shorter side. Ryan Rickelton flashes his blade and misses.

17.5Fuller and straighter at the stumps, Ryan Rickelton knocks it back towards the bowler.

17.4Length ball on top of off. Aiden Markram hits it through covers for a single.

17.3FOUR! Aiden Markram has been putting the short balls away all day long and put this one away firmly as well! Carse drops it short and at the bodyline. The ball sits up nicely and Aiden Markram just belts it over mid-wicket for four more runs.

17.2Good length delivery, outside off, Aiden Markram taps it to point.

17.1Length delivery and keeps the line outside off, Aiden Markram slashes it behind point and comes back for the second run with ease.

16.5Tad shorter and outside off, turn away. Markram presses back to punch it down to wide of long off for a single.

16.4Flatter delivery, outside off, Ryan Rickelton plays it through covers for a single.

16.2FOUR! Two in a row! Aiden Markram finds his touch again! Aiden Markram bowls a half-tracker on leg, spins in. Aiden Markram makes room and strokes it through covers for a boundary.

16.1FOUR! A lucky one for Aiden Markram, and he won't mind at all. Rashid perfectly loops it up on off and gets the ball to turn away a bit as well. Aiden Markram stays on the leg side and looks to go over covers, but the ball catches the outside edge to run past the short third fielder for four runs.

DRINKS! South Africa are inching closer to the finish line and we have only seen 16 overs bowled so far in the chase. Aiden Markram has played a gem of a knock, fluid and filled with eye-catching strokes. Ryan Rickelton has been pretty quiet at the other end but he hasn't had the need to do anything as Markram has done all the heavy lifting. Debutant Sonny Baker has had a tough time with the ball and England will be hoping they can atleast pick up a few wickets, with just 29 runs left for South Africa to get.

15.6Length ball, outside off. Aiden Markram plays it to third man for a single.

15.5Keeps it fuller and outside off, Aiden Markram lunges forward to dig it out towards short covers.

15.4Baker pushes it full and on middle and leg. Aiden Markram turns it to mid-wicket.

15.3FOUR! Authoritative from Aiden Markram, and this brings up the 100 for South Africa as well. Baker bowls it on a shorter length and around middle and leg, Aiden Markram stands tall to pummel it towards deep mid-wicket for four runs.

13.6Hard length delivery on middle and leg. Aiden Markram pulls it to deep square leg for a single.

13.5FOUR! SHOT! Much better shot! Keeps it short and gives width outside off. Aiden Markram punches it to deep backward point for a boundary.

13.4On a length and outside off. Ryan Rickelton dabs it to third man for a single.

13.3FOUR! Welcome boundary. Streaky but South Africa won't mind. Shorter and on middle and leg. Ryan Rickelton looks to pull but gets a top edge behind the keeper for a boundary.

13.2On a length and on the pads. Ryan Rickelton tucks it to mid-wicket.

13.1Short in length and around off, Ryan Rickelton punches it to cover.

10.5Brydon Carse drops it short and around off, extra bounce and pace. Ryan Rickelton pulls but it goes off the cue end to mid-wicket.

10.4A fuller length delivery, around off, Ryan Rickelton digs it out to cover.

10.3Taken but it won't count! Short of a length and on middle, it nips in. Aiden Markram pulls but gets cramped a bit and it goes off the slice to mid on where the catch is taken.

10.3NO BALL! Darted on the pads. Ryan Rickelton turns it to deep square leg for a single. A no ball is called as Brydon Carse has overstepped. Free-hit next...

10.2That's a wayward throw from the skipper! A length ball, outside off. Ryan Rickelton punches it to mid off for a quick single. The fielder has a shy at the batter's end but misses and it rolls past the keeper and the fielder backing up can't quite collect it cleanly, conceding another run.

10.1FOUR! This will give him some confidence! Shorter and on middle and leg. Ryan Rickelton pulls it in front of square leg for a boundary.

Powerplay 2! Now, four fielders are allowed outside the ring till the 40th over. It doesn't feel like the match will be stretched so far though.

9.6A single to end the over and South Africa are 67/0 after the first Powerplay. Fullish length around off, just nudged away off the face of the bat and down to deep third for a single.

9.4On the fuller side of a good length and around off, driven along the carpet and towards mid off.

9.2Good length around off, Aiden Markram looks to play on the up but edges it down to deep third for a single.

9.1A length ball on off, Markram keeps the head absolutely still and nails the straight drive but straight to the man at mid off.

8.6Rickelton simply can't get going! Dragged length on middle, nurdled away uppishly and wide of mid-wicket.

8.5Fullish length outside off, a hint of away shape as well. Rickelton leans on and strokes it nicely but straight to covers.

8.4The in-between length, on a tight line around off and angling in. Rickelton watchfully blocks it off.

8.3Over the wicket now to the right-hander. Slower one, a bit short and on leg. Markram looks to flick but gets it off the pads down to short fine leg for a leg bye.

8.2Full and straight, punched back past the bowler but without great timing. The fielder from mid on cuts it off to his right as the batters pick up a single.

8.1Starts from around the stumps and bowls it a tad full around off. Rickelton lets the ball come on before stabbing it into the off side.

7.6Oh, almost an edge! Short of a length around off, seaming away at over 140 clicks. Aiden Markram stands tall and leans back to punch it away but the ball zips past the outside edge. Again, just a single off Archer's over. If not for him, South Africa would be so much closer to the finish line already.

7.5Good length around off, Rickelton presses forward and pushes it well to the right of extra cover to pick up a quick single.

7.4Another dot ball and Rickelton is now on 9 runs from 23 balls. Slightly full and angled across off, Rickelton leans on and pats it straight to mid off.

7.3Good length on leg, nudged away with sweet timing and to the left of square leg but Jamie Smith makes a sharp diving stop. No run taken!

7.2Slightly back of a length, angling across off. Rickelton tries to cut it late but finds Jacob Bethell at backward point.

7.1This is bowled on a hard length over middle and leg, Rickelton blocks it back to the bowler.

6.6FOUR! Brings up the FIFTY with a beautiful shot! Hard length outside off, nothing much wrong with the delivery but Markram is able to stand tall and punch it away square through the off side and the ball races away to the fence. A 14th ODI half-century for Markram and one of the most eye-catching ones we will ever see.

6.5FOUR! Oh, that is gorgeous from Aiden Markram! Full and on off, Markram stays upright, shows the full face of the blade and punches it on the up, nailing it back past the bowler and into the long off fence.

6.4Hard length, bowled wider on the crease and angled in towards middle. Markram blocks it off.

6.3Hard length around off, Markram looks to drive on the up but the length isn't full enough. Mistimes it to the right of the bowler.

5.3Hard length on off, darting across, Rickelton hops back and blcoks it back onto the deck.

5.2Length ball on middle, driven on the up and to the right of mid off. Harry Brook is quick to cut it off and keeps it down to a single. The 50 is up for South Africa in just 5.2 overs!

5.1Just short of a good length and over off, Markram taps it down in front of covers.

4.6Hard length around off, lifting off the deck, Markram manages to keep it down in front of covers and picks up a quick single.

4.5Oh, a misfield and Rickelton manages to pick up the single! Fuller one on middle and leg, punched away firmly and just to the right of mid on. Jofra Archer gets across to cut it off but fumbles and allows the batters to get through for a run.

4.4FOUR! Eased through the leg side! Good-length delivery on the pads, Rickelton just clips it away through mid-wicket and the ball speeds away to the fence for another boundary.

4.3Edged but short! Nagging length on off, slanting away, Ryan Rickelton looks to push at it with soft hands and gets an outside edge. The edge goes down to the left of Joe Root at first slip and doesn't carry.

4.2Fuller in length and around leg, Rickelton looks to turn it leg side but gets it off the side of the bat and down towards the bowler.

4.1FOUR! Baker is all over the place and Ryan Rickelton finally gets off the mark with a boundary. Full and wide outside off, a bit too full and squeezed away through cover-point for four runs.

3.6Good length on off, targeting the top of the stumps. Markram blocks it off.

3.5FOUR! Sublime timing! Fuller one, straying onto the pads, Markram gets his hands out in front of the pads and pushes it through mid-wicket as the ball races away to the fence.

3.3Shorter delivery, wide outside off. Ryan Rickelton shoulders arms to it.

3.2On a good length aroind off and angling away, Rickelton leans on to drive but gets beaten past the outside edge for the upteenth time in this inning.

3.1Beaten! A stark contrast in the contest between Markram vs Baker and this one, where the ball is currently dominating the bat. That in-between length, on the fourth stump line and just straightening down the line as well. Rickelton looks to block but is beaten past the outside edge.

2.6Much better but 20 runs come off the over! Back of a length and on off, this one pitches an darts back in, catching Makram high on the thigh pads.

2.1FOUR! Forced away! Fuller in length and outside off, Aiden Markram reaches out for it and hits it off the inside half of the blade to the right of mid off for a boundary.

2.1Wide! This time on the other side. Short and wide outside off, Markram fails to reach it.

2.1Wide! Wayward delivery, banged in a bit short and down the leg side for a wide.

1.6An appeal for LBW now but it is turned down! Good length on leg, nipping back in. Rickelton looks to block down the line but is beaten past the inside edge and gets pinged on the pads. No review is taken and later on, Ball Tracking shows that had England reviewed, it would have been three reds and OUT as well.

1.5NOT OUT! Oh, deary me! That was a very close call and it seems like the correct decision has been made, as there was no conclusive evidence that Joe Root had his fingers under the ball. Lovely delivery from Jofra Archer, a touch fuller and around off, shaping away. Ryan Rickelton leans on to play at it but gets an outside edge that goes low to the left of first slip. Joe Root moves to that side and tries to pouch the ball before it bounces. The third umpire is called in and after checking multiple replays, the zoomed picture shows that the ball might have just bounced before going into Root's hands.

Crowd catch again? Half-an-appeal from England. Ryan Rickelton is unmoved. The slow motion shows it clearly hit the ground before going into Root's hands. The third umpire still isn't convinced and feels it hit the fingertips. Look for an ultra zoom view, ball hitting the ground before touching the fingertips. Not out it is!

1.4Nagging length in the channel, angling away from the off stump. Rickelton leaves it alone.

1.3Crowd catch! Full and outside off, Rickelton gets low and punches it into the turf and the ball pops up straight to short covers. Ben Duckett pouches the ball and there's some excitement in the crowd.

1.1Begins with a full ball from over the wicket and nails it on off and middle, Ryan Rickelton gets low and jams it onto the leg side.

Jofra Archer to share the attack. Two slips in place.

0.6Length ball on leg, a bit of movement in the air and Markram fails to flick it away, wearing it on the pads. Baker concedes 14 runs in his first over in ODI cricket, not the start he would have hoped for.

0.5FOUR! Sonny Baker is getting a taste of what international cricket feels like. Good length outside off, angling in, Markram leans across and jut caresses it away through covers for a third bounary of the over.
