IPL 2019 | CSK vs MI Qualifier-1 preview : Where to watch live, team news, betting odds and possible XI

After the gruelling league phase, the stage is set for the playoffs with CSK and MI locking horns.

Moneycontrol News @moneycontrolcom

Handed a reality check in their last league fixture, defending champions Chennai Super Kings would bank on home advantage to seal their place in the summit clash when they take on a confident Mumbai Indians in the Qualifier 1 of the IPL at MA Chidambaram Stadium in  Chennai on May 7.

There is hardly anything to differentiate between the two sides as both CSK and MI have won the title three times earlier.

The Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led CSK has been patchy after a strong start and finished its league engagements with a six-wicket defeat to Kings XI Punjab at Mohali on May 5.

Close

But CSK will be happy to return to their den to take on table-topper MI, probably its biggest IPL rival, to decide which team seals a spot in the May 12 final.

CSK boasts of a tremendous record at home this season, winning six of its seven games at the M A Chidambaram Stadium. The home advantage and its supporters  will act as a big advantage for the men in Yellow.

A defeat, however, will provide both the teams a second chance in Qualifier 2 on May 10.

The CSK top-order has fired in fits and starts in the league phase and will need to come out all guns blazing against a formidable MI bowling attack that includes Jasprit Bumrah (17 wickets), Lasith Malinga (15 wickets), the Pandya brothers (Hardik 14 wickets and Krunal 10 wickets), leggie Rahul Chahar (10 wickets) and possibly Mitchell McClenaghan.

Skipper Dhoni (CSK's highest run-getter with 368 runs from 12 matches, 3 fifties) has been the mainstay of a rather inconsistent CSK batting unit and along with openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina holds the key against Mumbai as the usually fluent Ambati Rayudu has struggled to get going.

CSK, however, will miss the services of the Kedar Jadhav, who sustained a freak shoulder injury in the match against Kings XI.

But Jadhav wasn't in the best of form and his absence would open up a spot for either Murali Vijay or Dhruv Shorey.

Bowling has been CSK's strong point so far this season and becomes even more potent on M A Chidambaram stadium's sluggish wicket.

Imran Tahir (21 scalps), the second highest-wicket taker this season after Kagiso Rabada (25), has been at the forefront of an effective CSK spin trio, also including veteran Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja (both with 13 wickets each).

And the success of Tahir & Co against the powerful MI batting line-up could very well determine the course of the match.

MI captain Rohit Sharma (386 runs), the impressive Quinton De Kock (492, third leading run-scorer), Hardik Pandya (380) and Kieron Pollard will be hard to stop once they get going and CSK's bowlers have a tough task at hand.

The onus would also be on the ever-improving Deepak Chahar, who has taken 16 scalps so far, to pick up early wickets for CSK and stifle the rival batting line-up.

Going by the head-to-head record this year, MI holds the upper-hand having won both its encounters against CSK in the preliminary phase.

MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene would be aware of the job at hand and won't take CSK lightly despite the Lions' recent wobbly form.

CSK will certainly receive a boost by playing the Qualifier 1 at home with the crowd fully backing the team in what promises to be a cracker of a contest.

Head to Head:

In 28 matches that the two teams have played against each other MI have beaten CSK 16 times while the Yellow brigade have returned the favor on 12 occasions.

Mumbai have managed to blank Chennai in the both the matches that the teams have played against each other this season.

In the first match played at Wankhede stadium, Mumbai defeated Chennai by 37 runs. Batting first, MI posted 170/5 thanks to 59 off 43 balls from Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya's quickfire 42. Kedar Jadhav posted a fighting 58 but three-wicket haul by Hardik Pandya and Lasith Malinga  restricted CSK to 133/8 in 20 overs.

In the next match played at Chepauk, Mumbai again batted first and this time it was skipper Rohit Sharma who came good with the bat. He scored 67 from 48 balls as Mumbai finished with 155/4. In Dhoni's absence Chennai's batting struggled as they were all-out on 109 in 17.4 overs.

Team News

CSK all-rounder Kedar Jadhav has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL due to a left shoulder injury which the player sustained while fielding against Kings XI Punjab. No injury concerns for Mumbai Indians though.

Prediction

MI are the only side of IPL to enjoy a better head to head record against CSK in IPL. But at home men in Yellow are a tough team to beat.  CSK should win this match but not without facing a stiffing competition from their arch rivals.

Betting Odds (bet365)

Chennai Super Kings: 10/11

Mumbai Indians: 10/11

Pitch Report

The pitch at Chepauk has remained on slower side for the major part of the season. The pitch offers a lot of turn. Expect low scores in this one.

Moneycontrol Dream XI: Quinton de Kock,  Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Jasprit Bumrah, Imran Tahir, Harbhajan Singh

Players to watch out for:

Imran Tahir (CSK)

ipl 2019, srh vs csk, imran tahir

Imran Tahir is this season's second highest and CSK's leading wicket taker this season. The 40-year-old leg spinner has scalped 21 wickets at a staggering economy of 6.50. He could dent MI's much famed batting.

Hardik Pandya (MI)

Hardik Pandya hammered a six off Rashid Khan on the 1st delivery of the Super Over as he and Kieron Pollard chased down the total with 3 balls to spare. The win meant that Mumbai moved up to second spot on the table sealing their spot in the playoffs. SRH need to win their last two games to stand a chance of qualifying. (Image: BCCI, iplt20.com)

Hardik Pandya has enjoyed great form with the ball and with the bat this season. Pandya has picked 14 wickets and scored 380 runs. His all-round abilities could take MI to the final in one attempt.
