A popular residential and retail hub from south Chennai, Chromepet derived its name from the Chrome Leather Company. During the 18th century, the Chrome Leather Company was established in this locality and one can find leather tanneries here even today. This factory led to the rapid development of residential and commercial real estate establishments in this locality. After independence in the year 1949, The Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) was established here.
Accessibility
Chromepet is located about 20 km from the city. The airport is 6 km away from this area and the Central Railway Station is 24 km away. The micro market is surrounded by important localities like Tambaram, Pallavaram and Kovilambakkam. The area is situated on the Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST) which is a National Highway connecting Chennai with Trichy. This is one of the busiest roads in the city.
