India is a power surplus country but electricity does not reach all regions due to network constraints in some states, Power Secretary A K Bhalla said, reports PTI. "The installed power generation capacity is 330 GW. The available power is 220 GW. The peak rated requirement is about 155 GW. In term of power capacity and requirement, yes (India is a power surplus country)," the official said during a panel discussion here when asked whether it is an illusion that India is a power surplus state.

He said that the existing legal framework provides that the power cuts should be done only in case of technical faults or natural calamity. There is penal provision for unscheduled power cuts. But power regulators have rarely invoked that provision and penalised discoms.

PNB fraud: Banks seek forensic audit of Gitanjali Gems

More than two dozen banks have decided to seek a forensic audit to establish if Mehul Choksi-led Gitanjali Gems has indulged in fraud or not, bank officials said. A consortium of 31 lenders led by ICICI Bank, has an over Rs 6,000 crore exposure to the company and appointed TR Chadha & Co to determine if Gitanjali had indulged in any financial fraud, sources told PTI. Results of the audit will help these lenders in deciding on how to treat the account--either as standard or otherwise, they added.

As of now, Punjab National Bank has flagged its exposure to Gitanjali at under Rs 1,000 crore, a close associate of Nirav Modi-led companies as fraud, they said. The state-run bank has exposure of around Rs 13,000 crore to the three Nirav Modi held companies in the scam, though.
