"I have no hesitation whatsoever in declining to serve on the committee whose terms of reference have been prepared in a manner to guarantee its conclusions. It is, I am afraid, a total eyewash," Congress' Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said in a letter addressed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The letter came shortly after Chowdhury was named among the eight members to serve on the panel that will submit a report on the idea of simultaneous polls.
"Furthermore, I find that the current LOP in the Rajya Sabha has been excluded. This is a deliberate insult to the system of Parliamentary democracy. In these circumstances, I have no option but to decline your invitation," he added. The LoP in the Rajya Sabha is Mallikarjun Kharge, who is also the national president of the Congress party.

A Bharatiya Janata Party MLA and a former legislator from the party on Saturday joined the Congress in Madhya Pradesh, where Assembly polls will be held at the end of the year.
MLA Virendra Raghuvanshi and former legislator Bhawar Singh Shekhawat joined the opposition Congress at the party's state headquarters along with others in the presence of state unit president Kamal Nath and AICC general secretary in-charge of Madhya Pradesh Randeep Singh Surjewala.

A session of both Houses of Parliament will be held from September 18-22 without Question Hour or private members’ business, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha secretariats informed on September 2.
"Members are informed that the two hundred and sixty-first session of the Rajya Sabha will commence on Monday, the 18th September 2023," the Rajya Sabha secretariat said.
The session will have five sittings and members will be informed about the provisional calendar separately, the secretariats said.

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday urged people not to vote for the BJP in next year's Lok Sabha polls, claiming that the cost of one LPG cylinder will rise to Rs 3,000 if the saffron party wins.
Banerjee asserted that if the opposition bloc INDIA comes to power in 2024, a cylinder would be priced at just Rs 500.
Notably, the central government recently reduced the price of an LPG cylinder by Rs 200. A 14.2-kg cylinder in Kolkata earlier cost Rs 1,129.

A day after an agitation for reservation for the Maratha community turned violent in Maharashtra's Jalna district leading to several people including dozens of police personnel getting injured, the situation was under control on Saturday, an official said.

Delhi's Sultanpuri underpass to open for public from September 4
The Sultanpuri underpass project in Delhi, work on which had begun in 2010, has been completed and it will be opened for the public on September 4, officials said on Saturday.
The completion work has been pending for a long time, Mayor Shelly Oberoi's office said in a statement.
Soon after the AAP-led government took charge in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the work was expedited and pending fund was arranged too, she was quoted as saying in the statement.
The underpass has now been completed and it will be thrown open to the public on September 4. It will help ease traffic movement in the area, the statement said.
Balasore train accident updates: CBI files charge sheet against 3 railway officials for culpable homicide, destruction of evidence
The CBI on Saturday filed a charge sheet against three arrested Railways officials for alleged culpable homicide not amounting to murder and destruction of evidence in connection with the June 2 Balasore train accident case, officials said.
The CBI had arrested the three -- senior section engineer (Signals) Arun Kumar Mahanta, section engineer Amir Khand, and technician Pappu Kumar, all posted in Balasore district -- on July 7 in connection with its probe in the accident involving three trains that left 296 people dead and over 1,200 injured.
The accident took place on June 2 when the Coromandel Express crashed into a stationary freight train at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district, and some of its derailed coaches fell onto the adjacent tracks and collided with the oncoming Yeshwantpur-Howrah Express.
Maratha quota violence live updates: NCP chief Sharad Pawar meets injured persons, calls police action inhuman
Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday met Maratha quota agitators injured in police action a day earlier in Ambad tehsil in Jalna.
On Friday, police had resorted to baton charge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse a violent mob in Antarwali Sarathi on Dhule-Solapur road after those at the site allegedly refused to let authorities shift a man on hunger strike to the hospital.
Around 40 policemen and several protesters were injured and many buses set on fire during the violence that erupted. More than 350 persons have been booked for alleged involvement in the untoward incidents.

Russia deploys ICBM that Putin says will make enemies 'think twice'
The head of Russia's Roscosmos space agency said Friday that the country has deployed an advanced intercontinental ballistic missile that President Vladimir Putin once said will make Russia's enemies “think twice.”
Agency head Yuri Borisov said Sarmat missiles have been placed on combat duty, according to Russian news agencies. Further details were not reported.
The Sarmat is one of several advanced weapons whose development Putin announced in 2018. The silo-based missile, capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads, is intended to replace the R-36 ICBMs that are known by the NATO reporting name of Satan.
The Sarmat reportedly has a short initial launch phase, allowing little time for surveillance systems to track it.
