India needs to target high-value tourism as it aims to become an international tourist destination, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said at the Indian Chamber of Commerce Annual Plenary Session on October 18.
“We need to get people who can spend high dollar value,” Goyal noted.
The minister highlighted that India can learn from other countries to develop the country as an international tourist destination and the government was making efforts via infrastructure and connectivity investments to achieve this target.
“China has evolved as tourist destination over the last 30 years. India with all rich art and culture and opportunities to develop tourism has to be developed as an international tourist destination,” Goyal said.
The minister also pointed to the need for skill development, highlighting that Indians can cater to the world.
If the industry were to proactively participate in the skill mission of the government, it could improve employability of youth and fundamentally transform their lives, Goyal added.
He noted that Indians could provide their know-how to economies like the US, Australia and Japan, which are looking to now upgrade their infrastructure.
“We have assured basic needs for every person, so that even those who were left behind can contribute to Viksit Bharat,” Goyal noted.
