Gujarat Assembly ratifies GST Bill

Passed by Parliament recently, the bill needs to be ratified by at least 15 state legislatures before the President can notify the GST Council which will decide the new tax rate and other issues.

The Gujarat Legislative Assembly ratified the Constitution Amendment Bill on Goods and Service Tax (GST) unopposed on the last day of monsoon session today in the absence of Congress MLAs who were suspended for creating ruckus before the Bill was tabled for discussion and voting.

"The Bill has been ratified unopposed by Gujarat Assembly," Speaker Ramanlal Vora announced in the House after the bill was passed by voice vote by BJP legislators in absence of their counterparts from Congress.

The government has set April 1, 2017 as target for rolling out GST, considered as the biggest tax reform.
