Budget 2018: Experts discuss key goals for FY19

It was the first day of the Budget session of parliament and to mark the new session, President Ram Nath Kovind addressed a joint sitting of both houses of parliament. In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Manish Tewari of the Congress Party, Tathagatha Satpathy of the Biju Janta Dal, Syed Zafar Islam of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and AK Bhattacharya, Editorial Director of Business Standard discussed the president's address and the upcoming Budget session.

It was the first day of the Budget session of parliament and to mark the new session, President Ram Nath Kovind addressed a joint sitting of both houses of parliament. He said the government is committed to its promise of doubling farmer incomes by 2022. He listed out the government’s achievement for the increase in the country's forex reserves beyond USD 410 billion.

The President focused on minority upliftment and said that the government believed in the "need to empower and not in the policy of appeasement". He also stressed on the importance of hygiene, sanitation, once again listed the achievements of Swachh Bharat programme. He highlighted that under the Swatchh Bharat sanitation coverage in the country had almost doubled in the last three years.

President Kovind also touched on economic issues like what the government was doing to address the bad loan problems that the banking system needed to strengthen further and transparency was the key to the government’s policies.

The parliament will now sit on the first of February when the Finance Minister will present the Union Budget. The session will further see some crucial bills come up before the parliament - to name a few - the triple talaq bill, the menstruation benefit bill, the wages code bill, the motor vehicles amendment bill, the electricity amendment bill, all of this is slated along with the Union Budget which is scheduled to be presented on the February 1.
