After passage in RS, Centre to push GST bill in Lok Sabha today

The political parties set aside their differences to pass the long-pending GST Bill in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. All parties barring the AIADMK voted in favour of the Bill in the Upper House of Parliament.


The Narendra Modi government will try to push the Goods and Service Tax Bill in the Lok Sabha on Thursday where the amendments needs to be approved by a two-third majority, government sources said.


The political parties set aside their differences to pass the long-pending GST Bill in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. All parties barring the AIADMK voted in favour of the Bill in the Upper House of Parliament.


The 122nd Constitution Amendment Bill will now be sent for the Presidential reference. The President will then refer the Bill to the state assemblies.

At least half the state assemblies, that is 15, will need to ratify the Bill by a two-third majority.

The bill will then have to be given Presidential assent.


After this, Parliament will take up the actual GST Bill which is likely to be in the Winter Session of Parliament.

All these procedures need to completed ahead of the Centre's planned rollout for the bill on April 1, 2017.
