Aam Aadmi Party lost almost 50 percent of its seats to the BJP in the 2025 Delhi election, but a Moneycontrol analysis of vote shares shows that it suffered the most in areas Purvanchali, Jat and women-dominated constituencies of Delhi.
While the Aam Aadmi Party lost seats across all categories and class divisions, vote share data indicates that it could still dominate in the 12 Scheduled Caste seats in Delhi and the 12 seats where Muslim proportion is higher.
AAP, which got over 50 percent of the vote in seven Jat-dominated seats in the last two elections, lost all the seats in the 2025 election.
It also faced the maximum rout regarding vote share in these constituencies. The party could secure just 39.4 percent of the vote share, 11.8 percentage points lower than what it could in the 2020 election.
On the other hand, BJP gained 7.5 percentage points, lifting its vote share up to 48.3 percent from 40.8 percent earlier.
This was also the areas where the vote difference between the two parties was 8.9 percentage points.
The story for Purvanchali regions, where BJP won 10 of the 14 seats was somewhat simiar.
While AAP lost 11.2 percentage points of vote share in 2025 to settle at 44.5 percent, BJP gained 7.5 percentage points taking its share to 48.3 percent.
In seats with higher number of women electors, the situation was no different as AAP lost 11 percent vote share, while BJP gained 9.1 percent. There are 19 such seats in Delhi.
While the Aam Aadmi Party lost vote share across Delhi, in two regions its vote share was higher than the BJP despite the latter gaining ground and winning more seats than 2020 election.
In the case of Muslim dominated areas, AAP lost 9 percent vote share, but neither BJP nor the Congress apportioned that entire gain.
BJP’s vote share increased to 38.2 percent, but AAP’s remained higher at 49.5 percent. BJP won four of the 8 seats of these 12 seats.
In 12 seats with SC reservation, AAP won 47.1 percent vote share and eight seats. Despite the 8.5 percent jump, BJP’s vote share at 44.7 percent, remained below AAP’s at 47.1 percent.
Trouble brewing for Congress
While Congress could not open its account for a third consecutive election in 2025 in the 70-member assembly of Delhi legislature, it did register a rise in vote share.
However, not across all regions and more importantly not in Sikh dominated areas.
Analysis shows that Congress lost its vote share in Sikh-dominated areas, with its vote percentage coming down from 4.9 percent to 3.4 percent, as BJP took the vote share from both AAP and Congress.
The party’s messaging around Yamuna, despite Rahul Gandhi’s focus on the issue also did not click as its vote share in Yamuna adjoining constituencies was lower at 5.6 percent than 6.1 percent in the 2020 election.
