10 reasons why you need Aadhaar

If Aadhaar is not linked to these, then it is possible for one to be denied a passport. And that's only one among the many difficulties one might face.

Aadhaar is now becoming an essential part of every Indian's life. A recent news report revealed that the government is considering making Aadhaar compulsory for financial transactions like buying shares or mutual funds.

Also, the Election Commission of India is waiting for the Supreme Court's decision on an application seeking to make it compulsory for voters to link their Aadhaar numbers to their voter IDs.

Currently, Aadhaar is mandatory for the 10 things listed below. If Aadhaar is not linked to these, then it is possible for one to be denied a passport. And that's only one among the many difficulties one might face.

>Income-tax return 

Every income taxpayer has to now link Aadhaar with their PAN card. If it is not done, the PAN card may become invalid. The MoF had earlier set the deadline to link PAN with Aadhaar as August 31.


However, on Friday, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told the Lok Sabha that there is no fixed deadline to link PAN and Aadhaar.

>Bank Account

Anyone wishing to open a bank account is required to provide his/her Aadhaar details. For existing bank account holders, the Aadhaar number has to be linked by December 31. To make a transaction above Rs 50,000, Aadhaar details have to be provided.

>PAN Card

To apply for a PAN, Aadhaar is now a mandate. Existing PANs also have to be linked to Aadhaar.

>Phone Number

For new SIM registerees, it is compulsory to provide Aadhaar details to the subscriber chosen. The existing SIM holders will also have to link theirs to their Aadhaar.

>Employment Provident Funds (EPF) Account

The Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has also made it compulsory to link PFs to Aadhaar.


To apply for a scholarship, students will have to provide their Aadhaar details. However, this is necessary only for availing scholarships from government colleges.


Aadhaar will now be used as a date of birth (DoB) proof. It is mandatory to provide Aadhaar details to apply for a passport.

>Railway ticket concessions

If there are difficulties in the journey, one has the right to quote for concessions. However, now, the Indian Railways has made it mandatory to quote Aadhaar to avail such concessions.

> Mid-day meal

All the students studying in government schools have to provide their Aadhaar details to avail mid-day meals.

>PDS benefits

Ration cards will have to be linked with Aadhaar to avail Public Distribution Benefits.
