Cyrus Mistry, former Tata Group chairman, dies in road accident

The other two persons travelling with Cyrus Mistry, including the car driver, were injured. All the injured persons have been shifted to a hospital in Gujarat. The accident took place at Charoti in Palghar when his Mercedes was returning from Ahmedabad to Mumbai.

Former Tata Group chairman Cyrus Mistry died in a road accident on September 4. The accident occurred at Charoti in Palghar when his Mercedes was returning from Ahmedabad to Mumbai.

“The accident took place around 3.15 pm when Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad. The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an accident,” PTI news agency quoted a police official as saying.

The other two persons travelling with him, including the car driver, were injured. All the injured persons have been shifted to a hospital in Gujarat.

The body of Cyrus Mistry has been shifted to the Kasa Rural Hospital for postmortem. A Kasa police station officer said the accident occurred at Charoti Naka on the Surya river bridge under the Kasa police station limits.

Mistry is survived by his wife and two sons. One of his close family friends said that Mistry’s family members were abroad for a function.

Officials of Shapoorji Pallonji are on their way to Palghar. Family members of Cyrus Mistry are also leaving for Palghar in some time.

Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed condolences and prayers with the Mistry family and said that he was deeply saddened by the sudden and untimely demise of Cyrus Mistry. "He had a passion for life and it is really tragic that he passed away at such a young age," Chandrasekaran said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while expressing shock said that Mistry was a promising business leader who believed in India's economic prowess.


Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his shock and said: “Mistry was not only a successful industrialist but a young and future-oriented individual too. We have lost a talented industrialist. His death is not only a loss for the Mistry family but for India’s industrial sector as well. My heartfelt condolences on his demise.”

Taking to Twitter Union Minister Nitin Gadkari voiced sadness and expressed condolences to his family members.

Nationalist Congress Party MP, Supriya Sule termed the news devastating and wrote that she lost her brother.

image (2)Mistry was the chairman of Tata Group from 2012 to 2016. He had taken over as chairman in December post-Ratan Tata’s retirement.

In October 2016, Cyrus Mistry was ousted as chairman of Tata Sons, the group’s holding company. He then accused the airline of financial wrongdoing and corporate governance violations, including at AirAsia India, a Tata-owned airline that was founded in partnership with Malaysia’s AirAsia Bhd.

Mistry highlighted “fraudulent transactions and ethical concerns” at AirAsia India revealed by a forensic investigation, in a letter he wrote to the directors of Tata Sons.
