Telstra plans captive unit in India for emerging technologies

Telstra is looking at opportunities to improve customer experience, a company spokesperson told BS in an e-mail adding that no decision has been taken on an offshore captive or global in-house unit yet.

Telstra is planning to set up a captive offshore center in India with assistance of its decade-old partner Infosys. The center will look at emerging technologies at lower costs, a report in the Business Standard said.

The center initially will have 200 people. The Australian company has been outsourcing technology work to Infosys for the last many years.

Captives operate in India across all service lines like IT services, BPM, engineering services, and product development. The country has nearly 1,050 captive stores employing 7,90,000 people.

According to Nasscom, captive centers have become an important part of the technology business contributing nearly 20 percent share of USD 22 billion in IT-BPM (information technology-business process management) exports from India.
