Tata Steel hasn't 'reciprocated' to talks: UK MP on strike

British MP Stephen Kinnock, in whose Aberavon constituency the Tata Steel plant is located, said he was hopeful that the company management‘s impending all-party meeting in Parliament would find a way forward from the impasse.

Tata Steel has informed stock exchanges about the impending strike at its UK plant, after talks between the management and workers’ unions broke down over the issue.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18’s Shereen Bhan, British MP Stephen Kinnock, in whose Aberavon constituency the Tata Steel plant is located, said the company’s UK operations were ‘critical’ for the economy but added that the company had not ‘reciprocated’ to take talks forward.

“Tata Steel union workers have always been pragmatic and will not threaten industrial action irrationally,” he said, adding that he would do “whatever it takes” to protect their interests.

Kinnock further claimed that it was difficult for workers to comprehend working for five more years in order to be eligible for pension, as proposed by the Tata plan. He added that he was hopeful that the company management’s impending all-party meeting in Parliament would find a way forward from the impasse.
