S Ramesh of Kotak Investment Banking on key M&A trends

In an interview to CNBC-TV18, S Ramesh, MD & CEO of Kotak Investment Banking, from the sidelines of Kotak Institutional Equities - Chasing Growth Conference, spoke about private equities and also on merger and acquisition (M&A) trends.

Ramesh said that in calendar ’17 we saw close to USD 73 billion of overall M&A including private equity investment. Of this USD 73 billion private equity investment was close to about USD 26-27 billion, if we remove that we are talking about M&A volume of about 45-46 million, the classical M&A and it was dominated by two themes. One is domestic-domestic and second is restructuring.

We saw a significant decline in inbound M&A and outbound remained at same level where it has been for the last two-three years and if we deep dive into domestic M&A that has happened, the trend talks about some of these themes. It saw strong companies wanting to acquire in the cement sector. It saw in the broader banks, financial services & insurance (BFSI) space new players from the domestic side who want to consolidate, he added.
