Venus Remedies wins patent for research drug, Achnil, a once-a-day painkiller injection specially for the aged, till 2025 from the European Patent Office (EPO), the company said in a press release to the stock exchanges Tuesday.

Venus Remedies wins patent for research drug, Achnil, a once-a-day painkiller injection specially for the aged, till 2025 from the European Patent Office (EPO), the company said in a press release to the stock exchanges Tuesday.Achnil, or Aceclofenace, is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug used to relieve acute as well as chronic pain and swelling in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, low back pain, ankylosing spondylitis, dental pain, post traumatic pain etc.It took Venus Remedies more than five years to develop Achnil that has already been approved by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), the company said. The company plans to launch the product next month.In the European market, Venus Remedies plans to commercialise Achnil through out-licensing of exclusive market right to pharma majors, the company said in the press release.The patent from the EPO makes it eligible to market the drug in major economies such as Germany, UK, France, Spain, Sweden, Italy and Switzerland, the company said.Venus Remedies said that the global market for pain management is estimated to touch USD 60 billion by 2015, with currently more than 1.5 billion people globally suffers from chronic pain of varying degree.This is the second European patent success for Venus after Sulbactomax, a drug used in the treatment of respiratory and urinary tract infections.At 12:05 hrs, shares of Venues Remedies were trading at Rs 209.90, up 7% on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
