Intel expects more smartphones on MeeGo platform next year

After Nokia's announcement to bring only one handset based on MeeGo operating system, Intel is in talks with other cellphone makers for developing handsets on the open source-based platform.


"We do have a robust roadmap in place to bring the first MeeGo phone based on Intel architecture and you should begin to see Intel-based smartphones in market no later than next year," an Intel Spokesperson told PTI.

Intel in a recent IT and telecom exhibition at Taiwan has showcased MeeGo-based netbooks that included the Acer Aspire One Happy 2, Asus Eee PC X101, Samsung N100 and Lenovo IdeaPad S100.


However, it is only Nokia which has showcased a smartphone on Meego OS. With handset maker shifting its focus to Windows based smartphones, Intel has started working with alternate option to develop Meego eco-system.


The Intel spokesperson did not mention the name of the company that Intel is talking to for Meego but said that the company is working with a number of players to devices on Meego operating system.


"We are actively working with a number of different handset OEMs (original equipment makers) and wireless operators and have multiple designs in the pipeline," the spokesperson added.


Intel has accelerating plans to become the processor architecture of choice across a variety of smart device and market segments which include netbooks and laptops, cars, smart phones, tablets and smart TVs. Meeego OS is considered crucial for Intel's expansion in these segments.
