US carmaker Ford today held a ground-breaking ceremony for its second manufacturing facility in India at Sanand in Gujarat.

US carmaker Ford today held a ground-breaking ceremony for its second manufacturing facility in India at Sanand in Gujarat.

The company which is present in India through a wholly owned subsidiary Ford India, is investing about USD 1 billion to build a new vehicle manufacturing and engine plant in Gujarat.

The first vehicle and engine are scheduled to come off the line in 2014, a company statement said.

It will be one of the seven plants Ford is constructing in India, Thailand and China to boost its production.

"These new state-of-the-art facilities will help us reach the goal of increasing worldwide sales by nearly 50% by mid-decade to 8 million vehicles per year," Ford's President Asia Pacific Joe Hinrichs, said in a statement.

The new facility at Sanand will create 5,000 jobs, and will be able to initially produce 2.40 lakh vehicles and 2.7 lakh engines per year, it said.

The company's plant in Chennai has capacity to produce 2 lakh cars and 2.5 lakh engines units annually.

The Sanand facility is equipped to produce both petrol and diesel engines on the same assembly lines, the company statement said.

Earlier, Ford had announced to invest around USD 72 million by 2012 to expand its powertrain facility in Chennai to 3.30 lakh units, an additional output of 80,000 engines by next year, to support its sales and export growth plans in India.
