Sales of air coolers have increased over two-fold in the national capital region (NCR), due to intense heat this summer and delayed rains, an Assocham study has said.

"After a gap of about six years, air coolers sales in NCR have seen a sharp upward trend due to intense heat waves and delayed monsoon," Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat said.

The chamber said it has surveyed over 400 shopkeepers in areas like Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon and Faridabad.

"The maximum sale of coolers was witnessed in Delhi, followed by Gurgaon, Noida and Faridabad," it said.

However, the survey did not give the total number of air coolers sold during this summer season.

The survey said coolers prices have also increased by 10-15% this year, but the demand is still growing.

Further, respondents said customers prefer to buy coolers over air conditioners (ACs), mainly due to high electricity tariff which has made it difficult for the middle-class to afford ACs.
