India's Dec power output rises 4.34% YoY: Govt

India needs to significantly raise its power generation capacity to reduce peak hour power shortages and provide electricity to millions of rural households.

India's power output rose an annual 4.34% in December, faster than the previous month, on improved operations at coal-based plants and better demand from states.

Electricity generation last month was 66.88 gigawatts (GWs), up from 64.1 GWs in December 2009, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) said in a statement posted on its website over the weekend.

In November, India's electricity generation rose an annual 3.93%, when coal-based plants generated 43.46 GWs.

In December, coal-fired generation rose to 47.05 GWs.

India needs to significantly raise its power generation capacity to reduce peak hour power shortages and provide electricity to millions of rural households.

But India will miss its target to add 62 GWs of capacity over a five-year period ending March 2012.

Generation by thermal plants, fired by coal, gas and liquid fuel, grew around an annual 2.37% compared with a growth of about 1.5% a year ago.

Coal-based power generation grew by 3.63% last month from a year ago, while in November it grew 2.89%.

NOTE: Total may not tally as numbers are rounded off.
