Etisalat's chairman and the UAE's envoy to India met the Indian Telecoms Minister Kapil Sibal and discussed the company's investment in the Indian telecoms sector, Etisalat said in a statement on Wednesday.
Etisalat's Indian mobile joint venture is among firms that have been asked by the telecoms ministry to defend their licences, as part of a probe into an alleged telecoms licences scam that a state audit said could have cost India as much as USD 39 bn in revenue. The government auditor has said five companies including Etisalat's Indian joint venture were not eligible for the 85 zonal telecoms licences they were given in 2008.UAE's Etisalat had bought a stake in a nascent Indian mobile firm in 2008, which has since been renamed as Etisalat DB.Etisalat Chairman Mohammed Omran "assured the Indian minister of Etisalat's commitment to deliver best of breed services to the growing Indian telecommunication market", the company statement said.
