Even as the boardroom coup to remove Cyrus Mistry as Tata Sons Chairman continues to invite reactions from industry and media, former Tata Consultancy Services vice-chairman S Ramadorai has resigned as the chief of National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and National Skill Development Agency (NSDA), reports CNBC-TV18’s Ronojoy Banerjee.
Ramadorai was appointed Chairman of NSDC in May 2013 with Cabinet rank and is likely to have resigned from the NSDC top job in mid-October. Vice-chairman Rohit Nandan will discharge duties at NSDC and NSDA till a new chairman is appointed.
Ramadorai is also the Chairman of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, AirAsia India and BSE. The veteran also served as the Chief Executive Officer of Tata Consultancy Services between 1996 and 2009. Thereafter, he was appointed Vice-chairman at TCS and continued to hold the post till October 2014.
Under his leadership, TCS prospered from a firm with USD 400 million revenues to one of the largest software and services company with an over USD 6 billion revenue.
Ramadorai was also instrumental in the creation of 'Tata Strive', an in-house skill-based initiative under Tata Group’s sustainability vertical.VR Mehta, member of Sir Dorabji Trust told CNBC-TV18 that he isn’t aware if Ramadorai’s reaction has anything to do with the recent developments at the Tata Group. He added that Tata Sons Chairman Selection Committee is yet to reach any conclusion.Below is the transcript of VR Mehta’s interview to Shereen Bhan on CNBC-TV18.Q: We are in no way at this point of time suggesting that Ramadorai will play a role in what has gone on between Rata Tata and Cyrus Mistry. But it is a coincidence nevertheless that he has decided to step away from both the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the National Skill Development Agency (NSDA) as Chairman at this point. Your first reaction?A: I have no idea about why Mr Ramadorai has resigned from his position in the government. But, what this linkage is to the development in Tata Sons, I have no idea.Q: We did ask the Tata Sons for a comment and they have said exactly the same that they are not privy to any information and hence I am pointing out and I am caveating that we are not extrapolating necessarily that Mr Ramadorai will have a role to play, but would Mr Ramadorai be somebody that the Tata Trusts and Tata Sons could lean on at a time like this in your assessment?A: Mr Ramadorai has been a titan in Tata Sons or the Tata Group. He has led he companies that he has worked for with great distinction, so that we all know, but beyond that, anything else, one would like to say is only speculation. And at this juncture, I do not think I am in a juncture, I do not think I am in a position to speculate.Q: If I could just as you given the fact that this is a large, complex conglomerate and given the circumstances in which replacement will now have to be found and you told us yourself that you believe that four months is perhaps a way too ambitious target given how long it took to actually find Mr Tata’s successor which happened to be Cyrus Mistry. In that content, do you believe that an insider would make more sense?A: It is all speculation because the search committee, the selection committee has still to come to its conclusion and it is just early days. I do not think there is any material on the basis of which I could answer this question for you.
