In his last full-Budget before the 2019 general elections, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced measures to strengthen the urban rail network by allocating Rs 11,000 crore for Mumbai and Rs 17,000 crore towards the Bengaluru metro project.

The Namma Metro network consists of two colour-coded lines, with a total length of 42.3 km serving 41 stations. The project has an East-West corridor (Purple Line) - 18.10 km long, starting from Baiyappanahalli in the East and terminating at Mysore Road terminal in the West and a 24.20 km North-South corridor (Green line) commencing at Nagasandra in the North and terminating at Puttenahalli in the South. By 2023, the system is expected to add two more lines: Red and Yellow.

The Mumbai Suburban Railway system is operated by Indian Railways' two zonal divisions Western Railways (WR) and Central Railways (CR). The fast commuter rail corridors on Central Railway as well as Western Railway are shared with long distance and freight trains, while inner suburban services operate on exclusive parallel tracks. It is the busiest commuter train system in the world with 7.5 million people using trains to commute daily.
