In the heart of Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, a revolution is unfolding—one that challenges preconceived notions and redefines possibilities for the differently abled. At the helm of this transformation is Jobin S Kottaram, the visionary founder of Project Chithrashalabham. Through a chance phone call and unwavering determination, Jobin has become a catalyst for change, rewriting the narrative of IAS preparation for individuals facing unique challenges.
In its early stages, skepticism enveloped the project, with critics casting doubt on the capacity of wheelchair-bound, deaf, or blind individuals to govern India. Despite the doubts, Jobin persevered, unwavering in his conviction that these individuals were not disabled but rather specially-abled. Embracing a mission of leadership development and inclusivity, he conducted one-on-one sessions to provide essential support. Recognizing the importance of motivation, Jobin, committed to the cause, delivered follow-up videos on various themes related to UPSC preparation in the predominantly online initiative. His goal being to ensure their representation in higher bureaucracy.
The journey is one of leadership development, breaking barriers, and fostering inclusivity. Jobin conducts personalized sessions to provide support and motivation, recognizing that these aspirants are not just preparing for an exam but challenging societal perceptions. Many of his students have joined the civil services, and a few are awaiting interview calls. Currently, the academy provides free coaching, both offline (in five states) and online, to 100 aspirants with various disabilities, including orthopedic disabilities, cerebral palsy, and visual and hearing impairments.
Conquering the UPSC exams poses a formidable challenge, particularly for individuals with disabilities. Nonetheless, Jobin advocates that unwavering determination can surmount any obstacle, embodying the essence of this initiative. The term 'Chithrashalabham,' translating to 'butterfly' in Malayalam, symbolizes the aspiration to provide students with disabilities a chance to unfurl their wings and soar to new heights, underlining the transformative potential within each individual.
