Ageing is the natural process of the body’s gradual decline in function, marked by changes in skin, organs, and overall vitality. It comes early due to factors like genetic predisposition, chronic stress, poor diet, and lifestyle habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of sleep. Environmental factors, especially UV exposure from the sun, accelerate ageing by damaging skin cells and collagen. Additionally, reduced production of essential proteins like collagen and elastin, along with slower cell turnover, contributes to early signs of ageing, including wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of skin elasticity. Addressing early signs of ageing involves a combination of skincare, lifestyle choices, and possibly professional treatments, says Noida-based dermatologist Dr Sapna Kumar. She also suggests some tips to combat early ageing:
Skincare routine
Use sunscreen daily: Sun exposure is the leading cause of premature ageing. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, even when it's cloudy.
Moisturise regularly: Hydrated skin is more resilient and less likely to show signs of ageing. Use a moisturiser that suits your skin type and contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin.
Include antioxidants: Products with antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and niacinamide can protect the skin from free radicals that accelerate ageing.
Exfoliate gently: Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and promotes cell turnover. Use products with AHAs (like glycollic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid) to keep your skin smooth.
Retinoids: Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A and are one of the most effective anti-ageing ingredients. They boost collagen production and increase cell turnover, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Healthy lifestyle choices
Balanced diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats supports skin health. Foods high in antioxidants, like berries, leafy greens, nuts, and fatty fish, are particularly beneficial.
Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated from the inside out.
Regular exercise: Physical activity improves blood circulation, which helps deliver nutrients and oxygen to the skin, keeping it healthy and glowing.
Adequate sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. During sleep, the body repairs itself, and lack of sleep can lead to dull skin and accelerate ageing.
Manage stress: Chronic stress can lead to premature ageing. Include stress-relief techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or hobbies that you like.
Avoid harmful habits
Quit smoking: Smoking significantly accelerates skin ageing by damaging collagen and elastin, leading to wrinkles and a dull complexion.
Limit alcohol consumption: Excessive alcohol dehydrates the skin and can lead to premature ageing. If you drink, do so in moderation.
Avoid excessive sun exposure: Besides using sunscreen, wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses to minimise UV damage.
Professional treatments
Chemical peels: These remove the top layers of skin to promote the growth of new, smoother skin, improving the appearance of fine lines and age spots.
Microneedling: This procedure uses tiny needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, stimulating collagen production and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
Laser treatments: Lasers can target specific skin concerns like pigmentation, fine lines, and texture, promoting a more youthful appearance.
Facial massages: Regular facial massages can increase circulation and stimulate collagen production, helping to maintain youthful-looking skin.
Consider your mental health
Positive mindset: A positive attitude and reducing stress can have physical benefits for your skin. Chronic stress contributes to inflammation and skin ageing, so practising mindfulness and enjoying life’s pleasures can also contribute to a youthful appearance.
Routine check-ups
Dermatologist visits: Regular check-ups with a dermatologist can help identify skin issues early and provide personalised advice for maintaining youthful skin.
