Globally, lung cancer is among the most prevalent and lethal types of the disease. In addition to smoking, which is the primary cause, the risk is increased by a number of additional variables . The risk of acquiring lung cancer can be considerably decreased by being aware of the risks and taking preventive action. Here are a few key recommendations to reduce the risk of lung cancer. These tactics, which range from giving up smoking to eating a balanced diet, can have a significant impact on lung health and the prevention of this dangerous illness.

Quit smoking

The best strategy to lower the risk of lung cancer is to stop smoking. Most occurrences of lung cancer are caused by either direct or passive smoking, says Dr Piyush Kumar Aggarwal, Clinical Director and HOD, Surgical Oncology, Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram.

To cut the risk by up to 50 percent, smoking must be stopped for more than ten years. For this reason, quitting smoking altogether will greatly reduce the risk of developing lung cancer.

Avoid passive smoking

Secondhand smoke, commonly known as passive smoking, is a substantial risk factor for lung cancer. It is imperative to limit your exposure to tobacco smoke. This include avoiding smoking-related areas and supporting smoke-free policies in public and professional settings.

Use air filters

One way to lower the risk of lung cancer is to use air filters at home and in the workplace, says Dr Aggarwal. By eliminating dangerous particles and contaminants from the air, air filters help shield the lungs from harm. Purchasing a high-quality air purifier can improve indoor air quality and safeguard lung health.

Maintain a healthy diet

The key minerals and antioxidants that prevent cancer can be obtained from a balanced diet full of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Eating a range of vibrant fruits and vegetables every day helps strengthen the immune system and lower the risk of developing lung cancer.

Avoid radiation exposure

Avoiding radiation to the chest, whenever feasible, is advised, whether it is due to medical procedures or other causes. Radiation exposure that is not necessary can raise the risk of lung cancer. Talk with medical professionals about the advantages and disadvantages of any radiation-based treatments, and look into other options if they are available.

Exercise regularly

Exercising daily helps prevent lung cancer. A half-an-hour exercise routine every day will help strengthen the lungs and improves overall health. A disciplined fitness routine strengthens the immune system, enhances lung function, and lowers the risk of lung cancer and other malignancies.

Limit exposure to harmful chemicals

Lung cancer risk can be raised by exposure to dangerous substances, especially in the workplace. Using safety gear and adhering to safety regulations are crucial while working with dangerous materials. In addition, employers need to make sure that workspaces meet occupational safety regulations and have adequate ventilation.

Regular screening for smokers

Low-dose CT scans as a screening tool can help find lung cancer early in smokers who smoke regularly. Early detection can save lives and greatly increase the likelihood of a successful outcome. Talk to a medical professional about the advantages and disadvantages of lung cancer screening, and follow screening guidelines as prescribed.
