Wine Vs cocktails: Can you guess which one spikes your blood sugar more? Find out from a French biochemist

While doctors and health experts always recommend avoiding alcohol consumption, if you still enjoy your drink, a French biochemist shared that having wine is far better than opting for cocktails. In another post, she also suggested pro tips to reduce some of its impact on the body.

There is no debate when it comes to experts weighing in on the consumption of alcohol. While it may offer temporary pleasure, it is not good for the body and has a negative impact on both physical and mental health.

While cocktails may be considered better by some, French biochemist Jessie Inchauspé, popularly known as the Glucose Goddess on Instagram, explained that they are not. She compared the blood sugar spike caused by a glass of wine and a cocktail, declaring the former to be better for having a lesser impact. “The wine is going to cause less glucose spike because it contains less sugar. The cocktail that contains sugar will cause a glucose spike and liver damage,” she said.

Moreover, Jessie suggested alternatives to cocktails, adding, “ If you want to pick the alcohol that is going to be least bad for your body, go for an alcohol that is not mixed with sugar. So go for wine, beer, or spirits with soda water instead of a heavy sugar cocktail so you don’t give your liver two things to handle: the ethanol and the sugar.”

For those who find it difficult to quit drinking alcohol entirely, the French biochemist share pro tips to help. These include: Pacing yourself: Jessie suggested drinking slowly to avoid overwhelming your liver, not going over one drink per hour.

Exercising: She highly recommended exercising whether you drink alcohol or not, adding that it is the only thing that can reduce some of its damaging effects. Drinking far from sleep time: Alcohol consumption often deteriorates sleep quality. She suggested, “Don’t drink right before you go to bed so you protect your sleep quality.”
