Does your child often complain about their leg hurting? Many children between the ages of 3-12 experience leg pain, often triggering concern among parents. However, some dismiss it as a part of growing up.
Growing pains are extremely common. Dr Akhilesh Yadav, Associate Director of Orthopaedics & Joint Replacement at Max Hospital, Vaishali, tells Moneycontrol, “Most children experience them in the evenings or at night, and they usually resolve on their own. These pains are generally linked to normal muscle fatigue or the rapid growth phases where bones and muscles develop at different rates.”
While leg aches are usually benign, certain patterns deserve attention. According to Dr Yadav, pain that’s severe, persistent, one-sided, or accompanied by swelling, fever, or difficulty walking should not be ignored. “Consult a pediatric orthopaedician. Poor posture, flat feet, vitamin D deficiency, and unsuitable footwear can also exacerbate discomfort.” he adds.

Symptoms to watch out for
Dr Yadav shares common signs to watch out for:
- Pain usually occurs in both legs, particularly calves, thighs, or behind the knees.
- The discomfort is more noticeable in the evening or at night, often disappearing by morning.
- Swelling, redness, or limping is generally absent.
- Children remain otherwise active and healthy during the day.
How to ease pain
He further shares simple ways to ease the pain:
- Encourage stretching exercises: Gentle leg stretches before bedtime can relax tight muscles.
- Gentle massage helps: A warm-handed massage with mild oil can soothe discomfort.
- Use warm compress: Applying a heating pad or warm compress eases muscle tension.
- Ensure proper footwear: Well-fitted, cushioned shoes support natural foot movement.
- Maintain adequate hydration: Sufficient water intake helps prevent muscle cramps.
- Give them balanced diet with calcium and vitamin D: Foods like dairy, eggs, fish, and leafy greens support bone and muscle health.
- Promote regular physical activity: Encourage activity without overexertion; rest breaks are important.
- Ensure proper sleep routine: Good sleep posture and hygiene aid muscle repair and growth.
“Most cases of leg pain in children are temporary and resolve as they grow. The key is observation. Parents should ensure good nutrition, adequate rest, and appropriate footwear, but also remain vigilant for signs that suggest something more serious,” says Dr Yadav.
