A lot of us dread combing our hair often, because we fear losing more strands than desired. Just like how a good hair day boosts one's sense of self esteem, having poor hair health and losing out on many strands at once can be deeply demoralising for some of us. In this day and age, more and more people are facing hair loss at a relatively young age.

A refrain thrown at people who stress too much about hair loss is that 'losing a few strands everyday is normal'. The real question is who and how do we get to decide what number is okay? Moneycontrol's team reached out to Dr Veena Praveen, Regional Medical Head (South) and consultant dermatologist, to understand the difference between hair shedding and hair loss.

Difference between hair shedding and hair loss
"A lot of people tend to get confused between hair shedding and hair loss. Hair shedding is a natural process where the scalp loses about 50 to 100 strands a day as part of the regular hair cycle. These strands fall out to make way for new hair and is generally temporary and not a cause for concern. In contrast, hair loss refers to excessive or persistent shedding that leads to visible thinning, bald spots, or reduced hair density, often signalling an underlying health or scalp condition," she explained.

Why is it okay to lose up to 100 strands on a daily basis?
Dr Praveen explained it is normal to lose up to 100 strands, because hair grows in cycles, and shedding old hairs allows for new and healthy hairs to emerge.
