Hypothyroidism refers to a group of symptoms that result from a deficiency of thyroid hormones. It often leads to slowing of the metabolism

Causes of hypothyroidism

It may be caused due to excessive intake of iodine, a history of radioiodine therapy or an autoimmune condition of the butterfly shaped gland (thyroid)

Common symptoms to watch

The person may feel lethargic and tired throughout the day. It can affect the ability to concentrate on daily tasks as well as reduce the appetite

Always tired, never hungry

Hypothyroidism leads to an excessive need to sleep, and the person may gain weight without feeling hungry as their appetite may be lost

Slower gut and cold hands

Cold intolerance is common, and so is constipation. A reduced heart rate, aches and pains over the body and muscle stiffness are also observed

Look at the skin and hair

Depression, psychosis, dry and flaky skin, increased hairfall and purplish lips must be looked for. Thinning of the lateral third of the eyebrows is another clinical feature

Hormones affect reproduction too

Women may experience excessive bleeding during their menstrual  cycle along with a difficulty in  getting pregnant. Men may show  signs of impotence

Face shows the early signs

A peculiar appearance of the face characterised by puffiness, loss of  colour from the face (pallor) and  a slight yellowish tint is seen  in cases of hypothyroidism

Tests that confirm suspicion

Elevated serum levels of thyroid stimulating hormone can point to hypothyroidism. Levels of sodium, haemoglobin, cholesterol and triglycerides must be checked

Treatment is for a lifetime

Lifelong therapy may be required for hypothyroidism. The goal is to bring  the thyroid hormone levels to normal and the drug regime prescribed  must be followed
