The scorching heat of summer not only brings sun-kissed days but also headaches and migraines for many. The throbbing pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound can turn a sunny day into a nightmare. As temperatures rise, so do the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks for some people, making it important to understand the triggers and effective strategies to combat them.

Causes of summer migraines:

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), migraines are complex neurological conditions marked by recurrent headaches that can last from a few hours to several days. While the exact cause of migraines remains unclear, various factors, including genetic predisposition, hormonal fluctuations, environmental triggers, and changes in weather patterns, can contribute to their onset. Additionally, during the summer months, several triggers such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, changes in barometric pressure, and increased exposure to sunlight can exacerbate migraine symptoms.

Here are a few strategies that may help you combat summer migraines:

Drink water: Dehydration is a common trigger for migraines, especially in hot weather. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to maintain hydration levels. Also, avoid caffeinated or sugary beverages, as they can exacerbate dehydration.

Stay away from sun: Limit outdoor activities during peak sun hours and seek shade whenever possible to reduce the risk of triggering a migraine. Moreover, if you have to go out in the sun, protect yourself from excessive sunlight by wearing sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and lightweight, breathable clothing.

Sleep well: Sometimes disruptions in sleep patterns can trigger migraines. Aim for a regular sleep schedule, even on weekends, and create a cool, dark environment conducive to restful sleep. Avoid caffeine and electronic devices before bedtime to promote relaxation.

Manage stress efficiently: Stress is a common trigger for migraines, and the demands of summer activities can exacerbate tension and anxiety. Include stress-reducing activities such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or progressive muscle relaxation into your daily routine to promote relaxation and prevent migraine attacks.

Watch your food: Certain foods and beverages, such as aged cheeses, processed meats, alcohol, and artificial sweeteners, may trigger migraines. Keep a food diary to identify potential triggers and minimise their consumption during the summer months.

Keep it cool: Beat the heat by staying indoors during the hottest part of the day and using fans or air conditioning to maintain a comfortable temperature. Apply cool compresses to the forehead or neck to alleviate migraine symptoms and promote relaxation.

If migraines persist despite self-care measures, consider lifestyle modifications, alternative therapies and also consult your doctor for personalised treatment options.
