Despite a strong start, War 2 seems to be waning at the domestic box office. The Ayan Mukerji-directed film starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR has seen a sharp decline in box office receipts, with Monday being especially disappointing.
During its extended weekend, the action-thriller performed admirably, earning ₹174.75 crore net in India over the first four days. But early cracks appeared.
Both the Hindi and Telugu versions saw a 42% decline in business on Saturday compared to Friday, and Sunday's results were inert. Industry analysts were concerned about the future of the high-budget spectacle because of this trend.
The movie made just Rs 8.50 crore net on Monday, a sharp 76% decrease from Sunday's earnings of Rs 32.15 crore, according to data published by a trading website. Given its sharp decline, box office observers speculate that the movie might have trouble holding up over the next few weeks.
After five days, the movie's total India earnings are Rs 183.25 crore. While it is expected to surpass Rs 200 crore by the end of its first week, its current trajectory casts doubt on its long-term viability.
On the global front, War 2 has had a respectable run but not one befitting its scale. The film crossed the Rs 200 crore gross worldwide milestone on Saturday. Yet, considering its reported production and distribution costs of around ₹400 crore, the film has a considerable distance to cover before entering profitable territory.
War 2, which is a part of Yash Raj Films' ambitious Spy Universe, builds on the popularity of Salman Khan's Tiger franchise and Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan.
Kiara Advani plays an important part in the movie alongside Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR. Future universe expansions are also hinted at in the story. Bobby Deol is introduced in a post-credits scene, which sets the scene for Alpha, the franchise's next installment. Alpha, which stars Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, will be released in December of this year.
With its strong opening followed by a concerning decline, War 2 now faces a crucial test—whether it can regain stability at the box office or succumb to its steep drop-off in collections.
