Built in the 18th century, the Sri Ranganayakaswamy Temple is an impressive example of Vijayanagara architecture. Its design is said to have been inspired by the famous Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu.

According to legend, King Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagar Empire was so captivated by the Srirangam temple that he wished to replicate its beauty in his own kingdom. After a divine dream, he discovered the idol of Lord Ranganatha between the Kothakota and Kanvayapally mountains and chose to build the temple near Ratna Pushkarini Lake.
