Renowned classical singer and harmonium virtuoso Pandit Sanjay Ram Marathe passed away at a hospital in Thane, Maharashtra, as confirmed by his family on Monday. Known for his exceptional contributions to Indian classical music, Pandit Marathe was celebrated for his soulful renditions and mastery over the harmonium, which earned him a devoted following. His demise marks a significant loss to the world of music, leaving behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire generations of musicians and music lovers.

Pandit Sanjay Ram Marathe was 68 years old at the time of his passing.

The artist suffered a severe heart attack and was admitted to a private hospital in Thane, where he passed away on Sunday night, according to his family.

He was the eldest son of the legendary musician Pandit Ram Marathe, inheriting his father’s profound legacy in Indian classical music. Pandit Sanjay Ram Marathe not only upheld his family's rich musical tradition but also carved a unique identity with his exceptional skills as a vocalist and harmonium artist.

Pandit Sanjay Marathe leaves behind a legacy rooted in Indian classical music and theatre.

He was highly respected for his expertise in harmonium and melodious singing, and actively participated in various programmes held this year, marking the birth centenary of his father.

In collaboration with his younger brother Mukund Marathe, Pandit Sanjay Marathe revived and staged the famous Marathi musical play 'Sangeet Mandarmala' as part of the centenary commemoration of their father.

The production garnered widespread praise for its innovative approach, seamlessly blending creative experimentation with the timeless essence of traditional Marathi musical theatre. Pandit Sanjay Marathe is survived by his wife, a son and granddaughter.
