The Elgin Darjeeling, a historic hotel in West Bengal's iconic hill station, has gained attention for its role in the popular series Paatal Lok Season 2. Although the show is set in Nagaland, the hotel's striking architecture and vintage charm made it an ideal location to depict the fictional Ruli Hotel in Kohima.
Built in 1887 as a summer residence for the Maharaja of Cooch Behar, The Elgin Darjeeling boasts colonial architecture and a rich history. The hotel has maintained its old-world charm, attracting tourists worldwide. Its significance extends beyond luxury, as it preserves heritage while offering modern comforts.
While Paatal Lok 2 did not film on location in Nagaland, the crew's decision to use Darjeeling and surrounding areas like Kalimpong and Lamahatta proved effective in capturing the region's atmosphere and essence. The chosen locations fit the narrative perfectly, bringing the rich, atmospheric vibe needed for the show.
The Elgin's history is fascinating, with the Maharaja of Cooch Behar constructing the manor as his summer residence. Over the years, the hotel changed hands, eventually being purchased by Kuldip Chand Oberoi in 1965. The Oberoi family has carefully restored the property, ensuring its vintage charm remains intact.
The hotel's walls are adorned with photographs of famous visitors, including the Crown Prince of Sikkim, French author Dominique Lapierre, and British journalist Mark Tully. The Elgin's historic appeal is enhanced by its antique Burma teak furniture, fireplaces from the 1800s, and lithographs by renowned British artist William Daniell.
The crew of Pataal Lok spent significant time in Kalimpong, filming many parts of the series.
Kalimpong, situated between Siliguri and Darjeeling, offers stunning views of the surrounding hills. The hotel Sterling Park Kalimpong, once the summer residence of the Maharaja of Dinajpur, was also used as a filming location.
Paatal Lok 2's use of Darjeeling and Kalimpong has been praised for its creative decision, bringing the Northeast region to life on screen.
Although the actual filming didn't take place in Nagaland, the series successfully represented the region's authenticity in other aspects. The show's immersive storytelling, combined with its powerful visuals and settings, has captivated audiences.
