In another shocking case of online impersonation, Squid Game actor Lee Jung Jae’s name and AI-generated photos were used by scammers to defraud a woman of 500 million KRW. According to a JTBC report, a woman in her 50s fell victim to the elaborate scam after being convinced that she was communicating with the globally renowned actor.
The victim, identified as Ms A, reportedly came across a social media account posing as Lee Jung Jae. The impersonator initiated contact under the pretense of being the actor himself, claiming to interact with fans personally. To gain her trust, the scammer shared AI-generated images of Lee Jung Jae, allegedly taken during the filming of Squid Game 3, along with fake airport photos and a fabricated identification card.
Over time, the woman was led to believe that she had formed a personal bond with the actor. The scammer who is believed to be part of an organised group addressed her with affectionate nicknames like “honey” and “darling”. Once trust was established, the fraudsters began demanding money.
