On Friday, Akshay Kumar released the trailer for his upcoming film, Khel Khel Mein. This movie features a star-studded cast, including Vaani Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Ammy Virk, and Taapsee Pannu. The trailer hints at a fun but complicated story set mainly in one location, where the characters are involved in a game that reveals their secrets.
In the trailer, Akshay’s character is shown as a man who secretly checks out women online while being married to Vaani’s character. There are hints that Akshay and his male friends might have more secrets to uncover. To add to the tension, Vaani’s character suggests they all unlock their phones for the night, making their messages and calls visible to everyone. She says, “Ek hi rule hai, hum saaton ke phone raat khatam hone tak public property hain,” which means that all their phones will be public property until the night ends. The trailer uses a lot of comedic sound effects and relies on familiar stereotypes, such as the 'funny Punjabi', the 'nagging wife', and the 'cheating husband'.
Akshay Kumar seems to be ignoring criticisms about the age difference between him and his female co-stars. Vaani Kapoor is over 20 years younger than him. The plot of Khel Khel Mein is similar to the 2018 Netflix film Nothing to Hide, which was inspired by an older Italian film.
Akshay Kumar had a string of big successes before the pandemic, but recently, his films have not performed well. After his hit film Sooryavanshi, he has starred in several movies that did not do well, including Bachchhan Paandey, Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan, Mission Raniganj, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Selfiee, and Ram Setu. He was also seen in a cameo in the hit film OMG 2, which he also produced. His most recent film, Sarfira, a remake of the Tamil hit Soorarai Pottru, was one of his biggest flops in years.
Reflecting on his recent struggles, Akshay shared at a press event, “It is not that I have not seen (this phase before), there was a time when I had 16 consecutive flops in my career. But I stood there and kept on doing work and I’ll still do that. This is one film this year for which we all have done lots of hard work and now we are going to see the results. We hope this is going to bring good luck to all of us.”
Looking ahead, Akshay has several projects lined up, including Sky Force, Jolly LLB 3, and Welcome to the Jungle. Fardeen Khan has recently made a comeback with a supporting role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Taapsee Pannu will be seen in another upcoming film before Khel Khel Mein; she stars in Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba.
Khel Khel Mein is set to release in theaters on August 15.
