Kareena Kapoor Khan, a celebrated Indian actor with a 25-year film career, has never performed a sexual scene on-screen. In a recent interview with actor, author, and activist Gillian Anderson for The Dirty Magazine, Kareena Kapoor opened up about her deliberate choice to avoid such roles, sharing her personal beliefs on intimacy and sexuality in cinema.

Kareena Kapoor emphasized that intimacy should be treated as a “human experience” and not merely a plot device. She believes that the way society views sex plays a significant role in shaping its portrayal on screen. “It’s just the way we look at the whole idea.

We don’t look at sexuality or sex as a human experience. We have to start looking [at] and respecting that a lot more before we put it on screen. It’s my belief,” she stated. This belief reflects her stance on why she has never been comfortable performing such scenes.

When Anderson asked why Kareena had never shown interest in doing a sex scene, the actor explained, “I personally feel that it’s not important to take a story forward. It’s not something that I believe that is required, in the form of a story. I know I will not be comfortable doing that. I have never done it.”

While she has refrained from such roles, Kareena highlighted the need for greater openness about sexuality in societies like India. “From where I come from, we are still not as open as having the narrative the way it is out there for you guys, the way you can feel it so openly. While female desire is openly tackled in the West, it’s always been so open about it,” she explained.

In her career, Kareena has taken on various roles that have pushed boundaries, including her portrayal of a sex worker in the 2003 film Chameli. When asked if that role made her feel liberated, she reflected on how it was a turning point in her career. “It was kind of a turning point because it also helped me tap into my own confidence, my sensuality at that young age,” she said.

She added that the role taught her not to conform to traditional ideals of femininity, explaining, “The fact that I didn’t have to conform to the traditional notions like looking a particular way of femininity, of being beautiful, because she was so brash and unapologetic. I think that was a form of beauty which I really appreciate.”
