Comedian Kapil Sharma’s show has been a fixture on television and streaming platforms for over a decade. Despite changes in medium and title, it has remained popular among its loyal audiences. However, Amit Aaryan, writer of shows like FIR and movies like ABCD, recently criticised Kapil Sharma's show, labeling it as "the worst show of India." In an interview with Digital Commentary, Amit Aaryan disapproved of the show's humour, calling it vulgar and derogatory, particularly towards women.
“The Kapil Sharma Show is the worst show in the history of Indian comedy,” said Aaryan. “I have the right to say this because I am more experienced than Kapil Sharma, Kiku Sharda, and Krushna Abhishek.” He criticised the show for its treatment of women, referring to Krushna’s character Sapna, who often resorts to below-the-belt humour.
Aaryan further claimed that Kapil Sharma cannot independently sustain the show’s success and owes much to his ensemble cast. “If you watch carefully, it’s not Kapil who is running the show, but the other characters. Even his Netflix special, Kapil Sharma: I Am Not Done Yet, failed because nobody was interested in what he had to say.”
Kapil Sharma’s Netflix stand-up special did not make it to the global top 10, although his television show has seen significant success. According to Aaryan, the humour on Kapil’s show relies on fat-shaming and body-shaming, reflecting a lack of exposure to quality comedy among today's youth.
Kapil Sharma has been a staple in Indian comedy since 2013, starting with Comedy Nights With Kapil on Colors TV. He later moved to Sony Entertainment Television with The Kapil Sharma Show, which ended abruptly before he launched Family Time With Kapil Sharma in 2018. This show ended after only three episodes.
In March this year, Kapil debuted The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, which recently returned for a second season. The viewership, however, has declined as compared to the first season. The premiere of the second season, featuring Alia Bhatt and Karan Johar, garnered 1.2 million views and 1.4 million viewing hours, significantly lower than the first season’s debut episode with Ranbir Kapoor.
