Kalki Koechlin recently shared an important message on Instagram, urging brands to reconsider how they package gifts for influencers and celebrities. In her video, she expressed gratitude for the gifts she receives, especially during festive times like Diwali, but asked brands to be more mindful of their packaging choices.
Kalki began the video with a light-hearted tone, saying, “Okay, I’ll try not to hyperventilate when I’m doing this.” She then proceeded to speak directly to the brands who send her gifts, thanking them for their thoughtful gestures but asking them to make small changes that could have a big environmental impact.
She pointed out that while she appreciates receiving gifts, she doesn’t need them to be sent in fancy hampers or elaborate packaging. Instead, she suggested that brands opt for simpler forms of packaging, like paper or recycled plastic, to reduce waste. She emphasized that it’s not necessary to use excessive materials, such as plastic bags or layers of wrapping, especially when the gift is small.
Kalki shared a specific example to highlight the wastefulness of over-packaging. “The other day, I got this big box, okay? And it was covered in cling film. Then I opened it and inside there were two layers of bubble wrap and then another box and then another layer of cling film, all for one small little glass bottle,” she recalled. She pointed out how this type of packaging is not only excessive but also contributes to unnecessary plastic waste.
She also made a practical suggestion for how brands can improve the situation. “If it’s something like that, just send it straight to my management, Exceed, okay? They will get it across to me. Just send it as it is in its raw form,” Kalki explained. By requesting that gifts be sent in their original, unwrapped form, she hopes to reduce the need for extra packaging that harms the environment.
Kalki concluded her message with a call to action: “That way, you know, we can let a few more dolphins live in the ocean a little longer and delay the inevitable.” Here, she used the example of dolphins to remind viewers that plastic waste harms marine life and ecosystems, and every small effort to reduce waste can help protect our planet.
