What can you do differently for a show that's set in France and has ‘Paris’ in its title which would surprise the views? Take a trip to Italy, of course! Emily in Paris season 4 part 2 opens with Christmas celebrations. Julien's (Samuel Arnold) ‘Christmas Boyfriend’ Dominique Is on his way to Paris. In the words of Luc (Bruno Gourey), he “only comes once a year” or as Luc says while correcting “a few times a year”.
For a show that is shallow, surface-level and frankly, unnecessary, what this critic absolutely loves about Emily in Paris is its millennial humour. The writing team certainly has a few GenZ writers who ace the lingo and gets the vibe just right.
Emily In Paris Season 4 Part 2: Plot
Our girl Emily (played by Lily Collins), is caught in a complicated dynamic with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo)—yet again! Gabriel wants to continue co-parenting his child with Camille (Camille Razat) all while giving Emily and his relationship another shot.
Meanwhile, Sofia (Melia Kreiling) whose Greek aspirations have come to a sudden halt, is struggling to accept that her partner is bearing a child of her ex-boyfriend. Mindy (played by a GenZ coded Ashley Park) continues to be most likeable characters.
Emily In Paris Season 4 Part 2: Performances
Mindy is holding onto her Eurovision dream still. She lands a new gig as a topless performer which Emily says is “good exposure”. On the professional side of things, Emily bonds with a new American girl in the office Genevieve who Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu) isn't very fond of.
As the season meanders through yet another story arc where Sylvie tries to bring down JVMA, Emily strikes up a romance in Rome and Gabrielle unlocks a professional achievement (finally), you end up exactly at the same place where you were initially—the same old dynamic where something changes but nothing really changes at all.
Emily In Paris Season 4 Part 2: Writing And Direction
The writers continue to disappoint. Camille-Sofia-Gabriele dynamic could have been used to portray queer relationships, hetro-privilege. Heck, Sofia's refusal to accept the baby and outright rejection of motherhood could have been portrayed with such nuance but unfortunately, Sofia walks around passing comments like “The baby doesn't need light. It can live in a cupboard”.
Is nuance still in the room with us? I don't think so. What the show does get right (the corporate dynamics and inter-agency rivalries) also seems to figure as the office drama loses its spark bigtime. The only thing going for the show right now is the GenZ humour which isn't supported well by a strong plot.
Emily In Paris Season 4 Part 2: What Works, What Doesn't
This critic has a confession to make. While watching episodes 6-10 of S4P2, I ended up playing an earlier episode in an inadvertent error. Honestly, it took me around 10 minutes to realize that the episode isn't really from S4P2. I don't know who this reflects poorly on—me, as a critic who made such a silly error or the show where any episode of any season is practically indistinguishable from each other.
Perhaps, Indian TV serial bahus could use Emily's luck. Our girl wears couture, takes a Roman holiday, and goes skiing across the French alps. Even when she is flying Premium Economy, she gets upgraded to Business class. This Mercury retrograde, I could use some of this luck. If you are in for yet another no stakes, inconsequential season where something changes yet nothing changes in Emily’s life, Emily in Paris is streaming on Netflix.
