Aamir’s big-screen gamble delivers as Sitaare Zameen Par shines at the box office

Made with a budget of around Rs 90 crore, the film has emerged as a successful venture, a rare feat for Hindi films in the last one year. Playing at limited screens, the sports comedy is recording higher footfalls in the second week of the film's release, especially in smaller centres where people depend on word of mouth.

Aamir Khan's bold move of releasing his latest film Sitaare Zameen Par only in theatres met with resistance, but slowly and steadily the movie has climbed its way up at the box office.

The film recorded an all-India net box office collection of over Rs 125 crore (as of June 29) and is running successfully across cinemas nationwide, noted Gautam Dutta, CEO, revenue and operations, PVR INOX Ltd.

Business has turned around after Sitaare Zameen Par's release, said Sanjay Barjatya, CEO, Roongta Cinemas.

"The film revived the business for June and we have seen some profits coming. After Chaava, business was slow and we were only at break-even point. The April-June quarter was under stress," he added.
