West Bengal has seen a good voter turnout in Phases I and II of the General Elections. While Phase I saw a voter turnout of 77.57%, in Phase II the turnout surpassed 76%.
Murshidabad, located in West Bengal, serves as both a district and a Lok Sabha constituency, situated along the banks of the Ganges river. Murshidabad, holds the distinction of being the ninth most densely populated area in India.
With a total of 22 assembly constituencies, Murshidabad is a significant electoral battleground within West Bengal. According to the 2011 census, the district boasted a population of 7,103,807, underscoring its status as a densely populated region with a vibrant and diverse demographic landscape.
Murshidabad has favoured a range of political parties, ideologies and leaders over the decades. In the inaugural Lok Sabha election of 1952, as well as the General Elections in 1957, Muhammad Khuda Baksh of the Congress emerged victorious. 1962 and 1967 belonged to Saeed Badrudduja of the Independent Democratic Party (India). Abu Taleb Chaudhary of the Indian Union Muslim League won from Murshidabad in 1971. The Janata Party won in 1977. CPM won in the 90’s under leaders like Sayed Masoodal Hussein and Moinul Hasan. In 2004 and 2009, Abdul Mannan Hussein of the Indian National Congress emerged victorious.
In the 2019 election, Abu Taher Khan of the Trinamool Congress emerged victorious in Murshidabad with 6,04,346 votes, securing a significant victory. Abu Hena of the Congress party secured the second position with 3,77,929 votes.
In the previous election in 2014, Badaruddoza Khan emerged as the winner with 426,947 votes, maintaining the Trinamool Congress's hold on the constituency. Abdul Mannan Hossain of the Congress party closely trailed with 408,494 votes, reflecting a closely contested battle between the two major parties in Murshidabad.
To say that Murshidabad loves change, would be an understatement.
In 2024 the electoral landscape of the Murshidabad seat is seeing prominent candidates from various parties vying for victory. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) is fielding Mohd Salim, while the Trinamool Congress has nominated the incumbent Abu Taher Khan for re-election. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has put forth Gouri Shankar Ghosh as its candidate.
