Former chief minister and BJP candidate Shivraj Singh Chouhan registered a big win in the Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency . Chouhan beat Congress candidate Pratap Bhanu Sharma by a thumping margin of 8,21,408 votes. The BJP stalwart amassed 11,16,460 votes as his closest competitor could manage 2,95,052 votes.
Traditionally, the Vidisha constituency has been a stronghold for the BJP. In the 2019 elections, the party’s Ramakant Bhargava emerged victorious by over 5 lakh votes as he defeated Congress’ Shailendra Patel.
In 2014, it was BJP stalwart, the late Sushma Swaraj who won the seat defeating Congress’ Laxman Singh.
The seat held more significance for Chouhan as he contested the Lok Sabha polls for the first time in over 20 years. Chouhan first won the seat in 1991 bypolls and has been elected five times from Vidisha.
Chouhan became the chief minister in 2005 and it was Swaraj who won in 2009 and 2014 from Vidisha.
The Bharatiya Janata Party hasn’t lost from Vidisha since 1991 and Chouhan has maintained that streak with a handsome margin.
