Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha Elections: As the political landscape in India braces for the impending Uttar Pradesh constituency elections, all eyes are on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to see if it can replicate its resounding victory of 2019.

Aligarh Lok Sabha constituency is one of Uttar Pradesh's 80 parliamentary constituencies. It had a voter turn out of 61.68 percent in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This year, polling in Aligarh will be held on April 26, and counting on June 4. The seat is held by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) two-time Member of Parliament (MP) Satish Kumar Gautam.

The Aligarh constituency comprises the districts of Aligarh, Etah, Kasganj and Hathras with a total of 17 assembly seats.

This year, Gautam from the BJP and Brijendra Singh from the Samajwadi Party (SP) are the main candidates for the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) has fielded Hitendra Upadhyay aka Bunty, a former BJP leader, for the Aligarh Lok Sabha seat.

The BSP had originally named Gurfan Noor, former president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) as its candidate from the Aligarh constituency, but after Noor suffered a heart attack, the BSP named Upadhyay.
It is believed that Upadhyay would be a strong Brahmin face against BJP candidate Satish Gautam.

Meanwhile, an independent candidate, Pandit Keshav Dev, made a distinctive statement during his campaign by wearing a garland of slippers around his neck. Embracing his allocated poll symbol, a pair of slippers, Keshav was seen proudly adorning a white turban as he was accompanied by his supporters.

Dev is a Right to Information activist and is associated with organizations such as the Bharatiya Hindu Rashtra Sena and Anti-Corruption Sena. He has contested assembly elections twice in the past. In the previous assembly elections, Dev contested from the city but faced defeat.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate Satish Kumar Gautam had defeated Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party-Rashtriya Lok Dal alliance candidate Ajit Baliyan and the Congress’ Bijendra Singh. The BJP is under pressure this year to repeat its 2019 victory.
