The Mumbai South Lok Sabha constituency, one of the 48 parliamentary constituencies in Maharashtra, underwent delimitation in 2008, resulting in the inclusion of six assembly constituencies: Worli, Shivdi, Byculla, Malabar Hill, Mumbadevi, and Colaba.

Mumbai South votes on May 20, during the fifth phase of the General Elections to elect the 18th Lok Sabha.

From 1952 to 1967, the Congress held sway over this seat. However, the spell was broken by George Fernandes, who secured victory in the 1967 elections under the banner of the United Socialist Party. The seat returned to Congress in 1971. From 1977 to 1984, it was held by the Indian Lok Dal and the Janata Party. Subsequently, from 1984 to 1996, Congress's Murli Deora enjoyed a monopoly over the seat. Although his tenure was briefly interrupted by BJP's Jayawantiben Mehta's victory in 1996, Murli Deora managed to reclaim the seat in 1998. In 1999, Jayawantiben Mehta again emerged victorious. In 2004, Murli Deora's son, Milind Deora, won the seat on a Congress ticket.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Shiv Sena's Arvind Ganpat Sawant secured victory in the Mumbai South constituency, receiving 4,21,937 votes. Congress's Milind Murli Deora finished in second place with 3,21,870 votes. Similarly, in 2014, Shiv Sena's Arvind Ganpat Sawant won the seat with 3,74,609 votes, while Congress's Milind Murli Deora came in second with 2,46,045 votes.

The dynamics within the incumbent Mahayuti alliance regarding the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat witnessed both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena expressing their interests in contesting for the seat. Initially, the BJP contemplated proposing Maharashtra Lok Sabha speaker Rahul Narvekar as its candidate for the constituency. However, after prolonged negotiations, the Shiv Sena ultimately fielded Yamini Jadhav, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Byculla assembly constituency, as its candidate for the seat.

Similarly, in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, the Congress expressed its interest in contesting for the Mumbai South Lok Sabha seat, citing its historical stronghold in the constituency. However, the Shiv Sena (UBT) countered this claim by arguing that the seat had been won by its candidate, Arvind Sawant, in the last two elections. Consequently, the Shiv Sena successfully secured the candidacy for Arvind Sawant.
