Khunti, one of the 14 Lok Sabha constituencies in Jharkhand, encompasses five Vidhan Sabha constituencies: Kharsawan, Tamar, Torpa, Khunti, Simdega, and Kolebira.

In the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Khunti has been reserved for scheduled tribe candidates. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has nominated its sitting Member of Parliament and Union Minister, Arjun Munda, while the Congress has fielded Kali Charan Munda as its candidate.

Historically, from 1962 to 1984, the Khunti Lok Sabha seat saw dominance by the Congress and the Jharkhand Party. However, since 1984, the BJP has emerged as the predominant force in the constituency, winning eight out of 10 elections, solidifying its stronghold.

In the 2019 elections, BJP leader Arjun Munda secured victory, defeating Indian National Congress candidate Kali Charan Munda by a slim margin.

In the 2014 general elections, BJP candidate Karia Munda emerged victorious, defeating Jharkhand Party candidate Anosh Ekka by a margin of 92,248 votes.

Arjun Munda, a renowned tribal leader representing the BJP, currently serves as the Member of Parliament for the Khunti constituency in Jharkhand and is also the Union Cabinet Minister for Tribal Affairs. His political career spans several decades, with notable tenure as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from 1995 to 2014 and as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2003 to 2006. He was also one of the prominent leaders who demanded the separation of Jharkhand from Bihar.

Kali Charan Munda of the Congress, meanwhile, is the son of influential tribal leader Muchirai Munda and former two-time Member of Legislative Assembly from the Tamar seat.

The Congress party believes Kali Charan’s influence with the tribal community in Jharkhand can play a deciding role in upcoming elections and can also lead them to a victory in this seat after two decades.

Voting in Khunti is scheduled during the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections, on May 13.
